What are the best exercises to strengthen and loosen your hips?
Thanks
I had this problem, and had bursitis issues. I ended up getting a slide board and working out on it. Hip problem went away.
I have back issues. I have a herniated disc (L5) . A recent MRI said the herniation went back in but I have further disc degeneration. I still have pain and I’ve had epidural injections… the last one I got didn’t relieve much of the pain.
So now I’m just going to do all the PT I can and try to strengthen my core and get as flexable as possible.
Thanks for any help anybody can offer me.
I’ve been doing the exercise in the weight room where you open and close your legs - it really has helped out. You can also buy the elastic cords you put around your feet and push them out side to side. When doing weights "I always make sure I get these exercises in - I used to have hip pains, but not anymore.
i too had herniation in 2006 that has subsided. same area of back with nerve problems at l4 and l5 plus disk degeneration (62now). mine came to forefront as result of bike crash in 2003 without proper treatment plan that finally came to head in 2006. having sat at a desk during my professional life hip flexors got shortened, back muscles tightened, running diminished so i think my hams were not as strong as quads because i biked much more than i ran. several things have helped over last year…peter egosgue routine (he has book and dvd) for body alignment & core(slight forward pelvic tilt); strengthen hams, and i have inversion table. i cannot tell you which is more responsible but all i think have contributed to pain reduction and some healing. when i crashed the bike i think i tore some ligaments too that never really healed properly and were reinjured when changing a tire (bad body mechanics). you might try massage for lower back and if you do have some trigger points (google) then perhaps one other technique might help these tightened muscles (that try to protect the spine)…that is dry needling…sort of like acupuncture. i have been using it about 5 months and thought my trigger points have not gone totally away yet they are greatly assisted by this technique done by a PT. because of the degeneration of the spine running is likely more of an irritant than biking and swimming although each is impacted by weak back area. to this end i am in the process of changing my lifelong power running style to chi running and both my back and knees are benefitting. i guess the key is to find a good back PT for an athlete not likely your rank and file PT. the ones i had initially were like assembly line robots who i did not find to be very cost effective and really interested in returning me to more challenging athletic lifestyle. there is a lot of stuff on internet that thru trial and error may benefit you. good luck
thanks a lot…I’ve been through everything with this. ART therapy, chiropractors, PT, epidural injections, foam rollers, trigger point, yoga, pilates.
I agree with you about PT…a good one is hard to find. They tell you to do a particular exercise and walk away without watching to see if you are even doing it correctly.
I used to wake up in pain and after exercise it would loosen up and was tolerable.
Now I can barely run, riding a bike is ok and I sometimes even feel it when I swim.
I’m going to scrap the rest of this season and I’m just going to try and rehab it.
Thank you for your post.
