Earlier this year we reported that Supertri had purchased the Toronto Triathlon Festival and was adding it to its list of By Supertri age group races. Today we learned that Toronto will also be hosting the opening race of the 2025 Supertri League season on July 26th. It’s the first time that Canada will host a Supertri League event.

The Toronto event started in 2012 and features a unique, downtown course that travels along two major highways. It was attractive to Supertri because it “attracts over 1,750 athletes and 200 volunteers annually, offering races for everyone from elite competitors to first-time triathletes.”

The pros will be racing on Saturday, with the age-group athletes hitting the streets on Sunday. There’s no word on who will be competing at the race, but according to today’s release “Supertri will bring Olympians to Canada to kick off their 2025 Supertri League and race to win points for the individual and team titles.”

It would appear that Supertri is getting some support from the Government of Ontario for the event – here’s what Neil Lumsden, Ontario’s Minister of Sport, had to say in today’s press release:

“I’m thrilled that Supertri has recognized the many values of hosting such an important international event in Ontario. More organizers are choosing our province because they know this is where sport thrives at every level, and I encourage everyone to come out this summer and see these incredible Olympians and triathletes in action. Congratulations to the Toronto Triathlon Festival whose long history has helped bring Supertri to our province.”

Today’s announcement means we now know where three of the Supertri League events will take place in 2025 – here’s the list of events announced at this point:

  • Toronto – 27th July
  • Chicago – 23rd August
  • Toulouse – 5th October

It looks like IRONMAN will be replacing the 70.3 race in Tangier with a new site – Agadir. IRONMAN 70.3 Agadir will take place on October 26, 2025. Agadir is the “second largest tourist city in Morocco after Marrakech … rich in culture and oozes adventure.”

“The course … starts in the Atlantic Ocean, on the showstopping coastline of Agadir,” today’s press release states. “The 90km bike loop winds through unforgettable roads at the foot of the renowned Atlas Moutain range, creating the perfect conditions for a spectacular ride. Athletes will then be treated with three-loop flat and fast 21.1 km run course alongside the Atlantic Ocean, and can expect it to be abuzz with spectators and local entertainment.

IRONMAN 70.3 Tangier took place for three years. While the event certainly got rave reviews from Slowtwitch Forum regular Devashish Paul last year, the race numbers at the race haven’t been huge – the race had 457 finishers last year, 355 the year before and 540 for the first race. (Which is a bit surprising considering how easy it would be to get to the race from Europe.) One would imagine that there’s hope moving the race to a more popular tourist area will add some numbers to the mix.

“We have had our sights set on Agadir for a while now, and everything finally fell into place to make the race happen,” said race director Soad El Yacoubi. “At the heart of Agadir is culture, adventure and hospitality, three things that make an incredible race destination. A city situated on the coastline with views that can’t compare; we truly believe this race will capture the heart of all of our athletes.”
