It looks like Versus is only doing a 2 hour recap at 8 pm tonight. I guess 4 hours of fishing coverage today gets better ratings. You would think that with Lance back we could get live coverage. I guess not.
Is there any way to watch the race live? I’m on the Tour’s official site and there is a race tracker page but I can’t tell if they will be showing the coverage there or not. Anyone know?
Watched most of the Prologue yesterday. I don’t have Versus, so it worked reasonably well. The intermittent glitches, but overall was good. The video is in the center of a bunch of windows and was really small for me until I figured out you can slide the bars of the windows over to make the video larger. You have to different camera angles and can do a “Picture in Picture” to watch both. There is a “Live Video” link, but I couldn’t get that to work yesterday. Will try again today.
I think the plan at Versus is one hour of taped coverage and one hour live–not unlike their coverage of Tour de France. Unfortunately, I think it’s the best we get. At least someone is giving it coverage. Not ESPN, with its numerous channels, nor Comcast or Fox Sports are even touching it. I’m happy that Versus is trying to bring cycling to the American audience and make it easier for new viewers to get into it (I’ve got two converts already).
If all the pedal geeks could recruit one or two new cycling fans, then maybe we can get better coverage? It is a business, after all.
Well they couldn’t possibly make their coverage any more boring than it is now so you can’t blame people for not watching. Tons of people bike but few of them watch the races. Cycling is kind of boring much of the time watching a bunch of guys pedalling in the peloton. Coverage ought to brake away during these boring moments to human interest stories or better yet how about educating the viewers on the nuances of the sport. If the commentators focused more on educating viewers about cycling strategy I think they would attract and retain more viewers.

I watched almost all the stages last year on the amgen site and thought they did a good job of talking about strategy. The Amgen site is pretty nice where you can track riders on the map and watch video at the same time.
