WARNING: Bay City Bike Rentals

I have phoned them before the first reservation, and this was not mentioned. Then I get an email saying it is min 48hrs. I phone them again and have this confirmed. Now 2 days later I have an email telling me it is min 72hrs. I feel no trust in them that they will stop at 72. If I pay now they will send me an email on Thursday telling me you want more.

My money has not yet been refunded.

I understand that Alcatraz - Tri has nothing to do with this. I just want to post a warning and ask Alcatraz to please remove them under the bike rental links because they are a dishonest business you so not want to be associated with.

Okay, your post makes no sense.

Are you trying to convey that the bike rental shop is saying that you have to rent the bike for 48 hours minimum? Then 72 hours? Or are you trying to cancel and they’re telling you 48/72 notice to cancel? This is related to the triathlon? Are they a sponsor or something?

Sorry if I was unclear.

I booked it for 24hrs.
2 days later they tell me there is a min 48hrs rental for Alcatraz tri.

See Bay City Bike email:
TRIATHLON POLICY- Please note, this requires a response!
During the triathlon all road bikes are rented out for a minimum of 48 hours, no exceptions.

I do a second booking adding more money for 48hrs.
After the second booking for 48hrs they tell me to that I have to extend again.

Wow, that’s terrible. Especially after you had paid for the 24 hour rental, then paid more for the 48 hour rental. I would be pretty upset as well. Have you called and spoken to a supervisor about the conflicting minimum registration periods? I’m hoping that if they’re on the alcatraztri site, they’re at least somewhat reputable.

Have you called and spoken with a supervisor at the rental place? I’ve searched their website and can’t find a single mention anywhere about minimum rental periods.

I phoned them when I did the 24hr booking.
I thought that maybe the guy on the phone had no idea about (the nowhere mentioned) 48hr rule. So with good trust I phoned and did 48hr booking. There was no telling they would ask for 72 after 2 days.

So far I have only email trying to get my money back, but the charges are still there and I probably have to phone about that too.
Time zone difference makes phoning California a sport.

I just don’t want any one else go through what I am doing now.

The same thing happened to me over at Bike and Roll. They all play the same game. I guess that is why the Alcatraz website has a warning about bike rentals jacking prices for the race.

Call the credit card company, explain it to them and see if they will let you dispute the charges

Dude, fraud is a very specific term which implies criminal intent. We get it, they messed up or they don’t have their act together, but to say they acted fraudulent can open you and even this forum up to lawsuit. You should adjust your header like NOW.

Don’t know man, this deal sounds pretty fraudulent to me…

Fraud: Wrongful OR criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain

Well, all I can say is have they had sufficient time to pay back the OP and has he exhausted all reasonable resources (phonecalls and email). Until he has done so and allowed a reasonable amount of time for a refund, I would be careful throwing the fraud card around. From what I have seen it looks more like ineptitude, bad policy, failure to communicate with employees, or perhaps they were overwhelmed and changed their policy. None of which would suggest criminal intent. That is assuming they do the right thing within a reasonable amount of time.

One thing is for sure, I wouldn’t rent a bike from them. So I’m glad he made the post, I’m just looking out for him and the forum.

Sounds like a scam to me. Get people to reserve bikes for 24 hours, knowing that they probably won’t have other options at a later date then force them to pay more than what they agreed to. How many others have they pulled this scam on?

At a minimum, it’s Bait and Switch.

You should adjust your header like NOW.If they purposefully change their “policy” after people book, then that would be fraud. And even if you don’t need actual malice for libel, nobody is going to bring a civil suit unless he’s purposefully making the story up.

Well I am NOT changing the title until I have my money back. Right now I dont and I dont have a bike rental according to them.

I still have NOT gotten the money back in my account but due to this statement I have decided remove FRAUD from the title:

“we request you now take the defamatory statements off of the Alcatraz forum (http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=4326765) immediately to avoid further action by us.”

I still dont see that charging for 24hrs is ok after a phone call, then increasing to 48hrs and charging and saying it is ok, and then asking for 72hrs after that? If I had paid for 72 I bet I would right now be doing the same battle for 96hrs or more…

I will post If the money actually gets refunded or if I will have to take further actions.

So by “avoiding any further action,” are they including your refund? Do they even have a legal leg to stand on when it comes to this forum?

Terrible that they did that to you and even moreso that they are now upset at YOU for complaining online. I certainly won’t ever use them now. You should write it up on their Yelp page as well as all the reviews seem to be for people wanting a bike to ride across the bridge for a few hours. More athletes need to leave reviews so when people are doing the race, they know what they will be getting into with Bay City Bicycles.
