I am a disabled (hearing) veteran of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne. I am competing in The National Bike Challenge. I have very limited resources and cannot afford a quality bicycle for this competition. Right now my ear specialist will not let me work or go to school to earn more income. My income is:
$127/mo. VA disability
$200/mo. food
Housing/Utilities paid for except $50/mo.
In The National Bike Challenge I have been doing very well. My current rankings can be tracked via http://www.endomondo.com/campaign/national/leaderboard. My teams name is TCCP Part 2, and I am rider Michael Lemuel. The challenge began May 1st and goes until August 31st. In May I rode 2405 miles (3870.5 km) and placed 3rd in the nation of 25,000 riders. My team was 5th in the nation of 2400 teams.
Besides riding all day (and sometimes night), I volunteer on the operations committee for a non-profit bike shop called The Topeka Community Cycle Project (http://cycleproject.org/). At the shop I manage volunteers, maintain records of earned and given away bicycles and parts, and teach bicycle maintenance. Shop Mechanics like myself put the tools in the bicycle owners hands as much as possible so that the owner knows how to do the maintenance themselves.
After this competition I will have to move to Connecticut for my ear specialist. While I am there I will be looking for other organizations to volunteer my time with as well as a cycling team to train with and determine if I have the speed to compete more professionally since I now know that I have the endurance.
I have a fundraiser page at http://www.gofundme.com/p1jlo for cash donations. Please message me for an address to send equipment. My hope is that the donations will help me to become a professional athlete and I can spend my non-training time to help communities get better cycling infrastructure, provide education on bicycle maintenance and safe riding, and provide training opportunities for other cyclist who wish to either become athletes or just live a healthier lifestyle.
Thank You, for anything you can provide.
Mike Lemuel
