I am interested in taking a training class on how to do a proper bike fit, primarily for my own interest. Are there any online resources that those of you who are bike fitters would recommend? Also what about actual courses that are based in Europe?
Funny you should ask, we just put up a camp for the middle of May here, everything you wanted to know about bike fitting, and more!! Just hit the bike fit icon at the top of the page and you can see what we do here…
I attended the fit clinic Monty referenced this past November. It’s a fantastic experience. While I would like to eventually do fits as a part/full time business, a big part of my desire to go was for my and Summer’s benefit. I had pretty much read everything there was to about fitting online but actually getting the experience in person is a whole other deal. Learning hands on from some extremely experienced fitters, sometimes each with slightly different philosophies made for a very well rounded education.
Thanks Ben, and dont forget my culinary man skills!! If you can’t put it on the bar-b-q, then it isn’t really food…(-;
And we make sure there is also time for folks to be able to get in a few workouts along the way, I got to be a barnacle on Ben’s back side in the pool, and the group did daily rides/runs to break up the day. And not like other clinics where you have to get a hotel room and figure out where to eat, you stay at my B&B here and I make all the meals. No traffic, no maps to follow, just nature looking out at 10k mountain peaks, sitting in a Joshua tree mile 4k elevation…
They are working on refining the approach to accrediting courses and adding online training. They would be the best path to finding training in Europe.
If you can make it to the states then Montys storytime and BBQ course sounds pretty good.
The biggest gain you can make in terms of bike fitting is getting to know the body. Find yourself a biomechanics and anatomy course before you start looking at a bike.
I’ve seen numerous bikefitters that didn’t know what to answer when I ask them what would change for the quads or hamstrings when they change something on the bike.
I’ve also seen teachers of bikefit courses unable to explain exactly this, so please don’t simply follow a bikefit course that teaches you facts. Learn to understand. But to understand you will need to know the body and biomechanics.
This is basic knowledge imho. If you don’t know the body, you’ll never know the fit.
To quote mr. Einstein: “Education is not the learning of facts, but training the mind to thinkâ€
And that time of year is just the best out here, mild 70’s/80’s temp with all day sunshine. I got room for all the campers at my B&B, and you can borrow a bike and get in some really fun lunchtime gravel rides…
