The Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) is a special place where courage has many faces … where perseverance has a first name … where dreams are nourished and heroes have a home. It is an organization unlike any other in the world.

CAF grew out of a desire to assist one athlete paralyzed in a triathlon. From this modest beginning arose a more important mission – to make sure people with physical challenges have the same freedom to enjoy sports as everyone else. CAF believes that participation in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life.

Since 1994, more than $19 million has been raised and almost 3,800 funding requests from challenged athletes in all 50 states and dozens of countries have been satisfied. Additionally, CAF’s outreach efforts reach another 60,000 individuals each year. Whether it’s a $2,000 grant for a handcycle, helping underwrite a carbon fiber running foot not covered by insurance, or arranging enthusiastic encouragement from a mentor who has triumphed over a similar challenge, CAF’s mission is clear: give those with the desire to live active, athletic lifestyles every opportunity to compete in the sports they love. Anybody out there ever participated in this fundraising entity? Eyeing IMFL CF slot, but I can easily raise $2100 for what seems a good cause? Just wanted to make sure it’s legit and I have an entry at the end of the day!

It is very much legit.
The Challenged Athletes Foundation has 5 entries for each of the Ironman events listed above. If you are interested you can call or email me directly for more details or questions you might have. If you decide you would like to fundraise for an event, I would email you a Team CAF registration form, for you to quickly fill out and return to me. Once I receive the form I enter your information into our Team CAF system for the event you requested to fundraise for and held that entry for you, taking it of the “available” list. The event entries are 1st come 1st served.
I am happy to answer any questions or concerns you might have.

I did a community Fund entry for Ironman CDA a few years back and was a great way to get in the race late, but also give back in the meantime.

Yes, CAF is clearly legit and a fantastic organization to raise money for.

Barbi will get you set up, just drop her a line, she’s great.

CAF is on the level and a great org= have donated stuff in the past to their auction.

BTW is CAF going to do another post fire?

Post Fire… What?

I may be getting my charities mixed up!!!

I thought you had a fire in your facility that destroyed all auction items donated, last year???

To answer a question that is coming in through emails -

The Fundraising Minimum does not include your Ironman event entry fee.

Barbi Ramage-Verney - CAF

You have the correct charity… and we are not planning on having another fire! lol
CAF did just purchase a building in Mira Mesa that we hope to move into this fall.
;o)

Will there be any slots offered for Ironman races outside the U.S.? (for this purpose, I’m including Canada as part of the U.S.)…

Ken Glah’s Endurance Sport Travel has some slots to sold out Ironman races. He sells them at his cost (about $700) as long as you book your travel with him.

We do not have any Ironman entries for Outside of the US this year. At this time we do not know what we will have for next year.
Feel free to check back with us later in the year to inquire.

Just another party confirming that CAF is legitimate and an excellent organization. One of my wife’s former students who is an above the knee amputee due to cancer discovered when he was in junior high was a CAF grant recipient a few years back and received an athletic artificial leg which enabled him to get back into running - he was a budding track and field star in Louisiana before the amputation. The organization does much work for kids, providing them with the tools they need to lead an active life.

Last I checked, Ken Glah wasn’t funding racing chairs or prosthetic limbs so kids and adults with physical disabilities can pursue a life in sports. BIG difference buddy!

If you simply want to get into a sold-out Ironman - - I agree, there are cheaper ways to get in… that’s not the point though.

Cheers
Bb

Thank You CAF for allowing me the opportunity to raise money for an amazing organization and get the chance to compete in a Sold Out event. Because of CAF I had the pleasure of racing this past weekend at the Oceanside 70.3. I wouldn’t have been able to enter this race without you. Best part I ended up winning my age group W35-39 and taking the slot to the Hawaii Ironman in October.

You run a first class organization! Thank You!!!

Kim

Kim - you are very welcome and pleased that the experience was a good one. Congrat’s on your Kona Spot and 1st place in your age group! Thank you for your support for CAF!

I want to share an email with anyone out there reading this post on slowtwitch. It is from a CAF fundraiser that was there raising money for CAF’s Operation Rebound program this weekend at the CAF 70.3.

Hello CAF,
I want to thank everyone for the opportunity to be part of CAF - Operation Rebound this past weekend at the CA 70.3. It was truly a gift. The weekend was about so much more than the race. I learned an enormous amount about true courage, stamina, will power, and the ability to live your life well…no matter what the circumstance.

I don’t have any military family or friends. I watch the news, and hear the statistics, but had no personal connection. Meeting the service men and woman that were wounded during service and other challenged athletes - Oscar, John, Evan, Melissa, Tracey, Andy, Saul, and Chris put a very personal face on those stories. You forget about their “disability” the moment you meet them and start talking smack about the race! When I was struggling on the hills this weekend at the CA 70.3, I looked ahead and saw Tracey pushing forward on her bike. I watched Evan literally lap me on the run. When I was fatiguing on that first lap, John came running the other way and gave me a big smile. They inspired me every step of the way.

I’m profoundly grateful and humbled to have spent time with them, and wish them continued success in their lives. I hope to meet them at future events!

Sincerely,
Mary Ellen

Sounds like a great program. Are you guys still doing this in 2012?

You might have better luck contacting them through their website, considering this thread is almost 3 years old and the CAF Team username hasn’t logged in since early 2010.

John

you can get into IMNYC this way. $350 deposit, raise the rest of the $3500 required by CAF.
