I’ve recently got a job that involves walking a lot and it leaves me very tired at the end of the day. Fortunately I will only have this job until the end of February since Uni goes back then and I’m only working over the summer break (southern hemisphere). Right now I’m really only running about 10 miles per week and even then, it’s only if I’m not feeling really tired. How much running could I do when I start again in March? Or, how much running is 60 miles of walking equivalent to? I was running roughly 25 mpw before starting this job. My goals are a 70.3 in May and an Ironman in December.
If you’re tired at the end of the day and you’re sleeping well, you must be doing something right
I say shoot for 30 mpw, see what happens. If you feel considerably more fresh than you do with this job, good. Try 35 the next week.
The idea isn’t to feel dead…I don’t think.
Good luck
if i remember correctly, the famous finnish runners in early-to-mid-20th century did indeed walk rediculous weekly distances as training for marathon running
.
Can you run your job?
Yes but it’s usually mid 30’s (celsius) and I have to wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt so I get very hot, very quickly. I have run parts of it before when it was slightly cooler. Also it’s not continuous walking. It’s checking electricity meters so 30 seconds walking, 10 seconds standing still repeated for 8 hours a day.
i was a meter reader for a little over a year. it was a FANTASTIC workout for my legs. taught me to HTFU (that’s not a shot at you).
i would still run about 25-30miles per week and bike alot. it was tough, but i think it helped make my legs strong and built in an ‘active recovery’ if you could call it that.
i will say, sleeping was a lot easier!
oh, and just for the record it really sucks going back to work a day an a half after an IM to walk the hilliest 10mile route we have!
good luck, and enjoy it! it’s like being a professional hiker.
