Volunteering at IMLT

Think I’m going to head up to Tahoe this year and volunteer, but I don’t know what kind of spot I want to pick. What’s a good spot for a first timer to volunteer? I don’t want any of the really early morning spots, so no body marking for me (though that would be fun), and bike aid stations kinda scare me.

Great spots to be if you want to be in the middle of the action and able to really help them are:

  1. Finish line catcher
  2. Changing tent volunteer (helping the athletes getting dressed, and helping to talk them off the ledge when things are going badly). Also a great place to learn tips for when you race an Ironman.

Both are jobs you definitely want to wear the provided gloves for, but if you can handle it, both are fun and very essential volunteer gigs.

My wife and I were bike handlers at IMLP this year and had a blast as well as a little bit of a workout. Waves of bikes come in fast so there was a lot of running back and forth to keep up. Fast paced and high energy. Some of the older volunteers were pretty worn out by the end.

I’ve volunteered as a bike catcher and finishing catcher, both are an absolute blast.

Thanks for everyone who has helped or is going to help at IMLT or any race. Without volunteers, we could not race.

6 weeks to fun time.
