I’ve used the Vittoria Corsa CX tubular for many years on deep profile rims. The previous tires I’ve bought have had a red 40mm valve which I have been able to replace with a 80mm valve. However, the latest CX III 23-28" (111.101.SC.23.121TG) I’ve bought have a brass color fixed valve body. That’s undesirable as I feel very strongly against valve extenders (they are nothing but extra hassle). Does anyone know what the deal is with Vittoria’s varying valve types? Even their website’s accessories page claims the removable valve is compatible with all the 320TPI tires (quite obviously not). I (naturally) tried asking them directly but after two attempts and two months of waiting I figure an answer will never come. Maybe the community can do better.
You need a special red extender only made by vittoria now that screws onto that brass part. They changed all their tubular valve systems to this new style and did away with the old style. The big downside is the new red valves don’t have removeable valve cores so its very difficult to add sealent if you don’t do it before gluing up your tires. You can find the new extenders online including amazon or other online bike shops. Good Luck!
Maybe we are talking about the same thing, but to be more precise, I’m after the red REMOVEABLE valve Vittoria has used. Its not a valve EXTENSION of any kind. Their brass valve has a standard presta valve core and can acommodate most any valve extension.
Sealants have never been of any interest to me. I get punctures once in a blue moon and always change the tyre.
It sounds like you have one of the older style Vittoria tires. They used to have a normal brass valve stem with a removable core until a couple years ago when they went to the red style where the whole valve stem can be removed.
If I remember correctly you can use something like this. http://www.zipp.com/accessories/detail.php?ID=16687
See if you can use some small pliers and remove the valve as shown is the 3rd image on the link above.

I feel like running in circles (no offense intended)
I DON’T want valve extenders (and I DO know one can use them). I thought I was being pretty clear about that in my both previous posts. Please, no more valve extender posts.
Having bought the products recently and referring to the product code, I doubt the issue is the tyres being older model (unless it had the exact same product code, etc.). As a matter of fact, I believe the “older style” CX suggests the 290TPI model, not the current 320TPI one (which I have)
Continuing my own rant, I suspect the issue might be one where they actually manufacture two different (valve) versions of the same tyre by accident or purpose. However, I can’t confirm this.

no you are running in circles.
what people don’t know is that the Evo CX used **the removable valve cores (**the red valves), which doesn’t have a removable core but can be removed at the base of the valve. I think a lot of people complained about how horrible it was designed, especially when you wanted to use a sealant as the valve core just gunked up while there’s no good way to directly inject at the base.
So instead of doing the logical thing (i.e. use the Mavic MVS system that is a removable valve with a removable core), when they released the 2nd generation of the 320 TPI tires (the CX), they just went back to the valve core design.
So basically you are out of luck.
The red valve stems suck. $40 for a longer valve is absurd, and trying to use a sealant it impossible. It sounds like Vittoria listened and went back to the removable core style.
Have you ever used an extender where you remove the valve from the the stem and put it at the end of the extension? The result works just the same as it would with the red valve.
I understand not wanting to use the crappy “tube style” extenders where you have to leave the valve open and it becomes not accessible, but the removable core solution works great.

I figured something like this might be the case. I’ll just have to learn to live with extenders then.
Thanks for the info!

you know, the 2nd gen Evo CX (with the removable red valves) are still being sold, often at a steep discount. if you haven’t mounted the new ones, you could consider just sell the 3rd Gen (the CX, no Evo in the name) and get a bunch of the 2nd gen at a discounted price
Just to make sure that everyone is clear…
Vittoria just released the Corsa CX tubular tires with brass valves.
These are replacing the Corsa Evo CX tubular tires that had red valves.
Please note that “Evo” has been removed from the name of the latest tires.
stumbled accross this as I’ve just replaced a cx 11 with a cx 111 and can no longer use the vittoria red exteneder.
What is the best valve extender to use with this tyre (I have 90mm rims) any opinions?
I use Continental.
@dopers.suck, I think your response is wrong.
This is how I understand this issue: The aftermarket red vittoria valves are long (60-100mm) “replacement valve-stems” for the pre-2013 Corsa CX tubulars, which were built with red 30mm removeable valve stems (valve cores were not removeable on these). these red valve stems are threaded to fit the stub that exits the CX tubular; these red valve stems cannot be threaded on top of typical presta valves (ie. to extend a typical presta valve). sealant can be added to this “red vittoria valve” system when you remove the OEM 30mm red valve on CX tubulars, while you have access to the valve stub and before you put on the aftermarket “red replacement valve”.
I think in 2013, vittoria CX tubulars went back to the old and universal system of a permanent valve stem with removable core. I just bought a pair of 2014 CX tubulars with a brass stem and my only option is to remove the valve cores, add sealant and then use any “valve extenders”(now silver from vittoria or continental , etc) to fit them to my 404’s.
ps. i don’t like the zipp 'pass through extenders because i always have problems getting a good seal on the base valve and leakage through the base valve-core, which needs to remain open in this system.
