Anyone do this? i’m thinking i might buy a Playstation 2 this winter to get me through some of the longer indoor workouts i’ll be doing to prep for IMLP.
I use my road bike on the trainer and there’s no aero bars. Does anyone see a problem with doing the workouts sitting up rather then on the bars? regardless of whether i’m doing something with my hands i’ve always wondered if this lessened the effectiveness of my workout.
It certainly affected my workout the one time I tried it. Perhaps if you are doing a nice easy recovery spin, it will be ok. But for when you are looking to build a big base and trying to concentrate, video games may throw you way of kilter like it did to me.
I thought about it last year - prepping for LP, too - but ended up just setting up a DVD player and renting movies instead. I figured it was better to get the body used to the position I would be riding, plus the idea of sitting up for 3-4 hours didn’t appeal to me…
I used a laptop for the movies, and rented them from a place that had a 3 movies for $5 deal - enough for the longest trainer sessions I could tolerate!
tried, didn’t work, I got caught up in the game and my effort went way down… the only one that would work IMHO is if there were games where you have to pedal at a certain speed to keep things moving (say, like those ‘fitness games’ in the arcades)
I have one of these, of course I didn’t pay what the Aussies have to pay. IIRC, it was only $100. It attaches to PS1 or PS2 and you can play racing games with it. The device is pretty cool and you become extremely immerged in the game. I almost fell off of the bike a few times while the video game vehicle was jumping over ramps and obstacles!!
CatEye stopped making this model and now they only make the full stationary bikes.
My PS2 broke about two months ago, so mine is gathering dust. I tried to sell it, along with some other gear at a garage sale, but the clientel was far from doing anything involving fitness. If you are interested, I would sell it to you.
Couldn’t even imagine using the Playstation and riding at the same time. Although we did buck up and get the I-Fortius. Now that is a video game to ride to!.
I have done it, and will do it again this winter but then I have only been able to have enough coordination to pull off tiger woods gold. Any driver or action games makes me looses focus on the bike. Golf it seems you only have to use the controller when its your shot. This way I get to stay in the bars.
I play xbox on the trainer. I find it easier to do harder workouts, or to focus on the riding, while watching movies or tv, but it’s definitely possible to go hard enough and play, it justs takes some practice.
Most of the time it works, depending on the workout. I hooked up my NES and played through Zelda and Super Mario 3. In Halo 2 it was difficult to aim, but since each round takes 10-20 minutes, the time went by fast, even if you can’t play well.
Lately I’ve been thinking of picking up one of those XBOX poker games on sale, that would surely help the time pass and it doesn’t require constant button pushing.
For anybody interesting in the gaming industry, when the Nintendo WII comes out maybe a game will use the remote as a lasso, then you can pretend you are riding a horse. Bad joke, sorry
I used toplay my Xox when I was on the trainer, it’s good to take your mind off the training, however you need a good gaming system, so get the xbox 360 NOT the ps2/ps3.
Are you serious?!?! PS3 is going to blow the doors off of the 360. MS has already started adjusting the 360, in an attempt to keep up with the PS3, and Sony hasn’t even released it yet.
Within the gaming community it has always been noted that Xbox has better, more mature, higher quality gaming compared to PS2, PS3 may indeed be have better specs. as far as performance, however that is no subsitute for lower end “A” games. Just look at Morrowind Oblivion on the 360…that speaks for itself. Not too mention Gears of war…splinter cell…to name a couple.
The only thing PS has are these generic crappy MMORPG’s that they sell in Japan which kept PS2 alive.
I don’t want to get into a pissing match, but some of the games you listed weren’t unique to XBOX (Splinter Cell is on both platforms).
I also think you would be impressed if you compared the PS3 to the 360. Even with the HD-DVD player upgrade, the 360 just doesn’t match up; unless you are glued to the HALO series.
