Very cool phelps photo from last night

How is his elbow action??

http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2007/04/03/phelps4407_wideweb__470x262,0.jpg

If he’s doing the butterfly, backstroke, or breaststroke in this picture then it’s really bad.

Obviously this kid needs to get onto ST fast to get some stroke advice. He’ll never get anywhere swimming like that…

The dot on the top of his head isn’t in the water!!! That’s horrible!!!

its a wonder he doesnt drown…

Isn’t it obvious that he’s practicing sighting for OW swims?

DUH

he has a very funny freestyle. he breathes on every second stroke and its super lopsided.

His hands are too small and his feet too big. Never will amount to much.

you will find many mid-distance to distance freestylers have an un-even stroke
.

That stroke imbalance is not that uncommon. There are a few people in that race doing it as well. VDH does it to a lessor degree.

A video of just the race is at:

If I had to guess, I would say that’s the first stroke out of the wall.

Matt Biondi did very well that that loping stroke, too.

Could be…i wonder if that was from the mixed relay when he led off against a female.

Elbow action? It is the force of his underwater pull that I wish I could replicate. If I pulled as hard as he does underwater, I’d probably dislocate my shoulder. Damn, he makes it look easy.

Don’t we all.

"That stroke imbalance is not that uncommon. "

stroke imbalance? his top left arm is symmetrical to his bottom left arm. flawless. like a mirror image, almost.

andrew moss

heh my stroke kinda looks like his, except much much much slower. damn!

Somebody tell that man his elbow is too high.

“how is his elbow action??” <----- good point

when it comes down to it… everyone has a different body and different way of swimming efficiently

the only reason anyone ever tells you to do certain things with your arms on the recovery is because of how it effects the rest of your body that’s underwater.

pointing your elbows to the sky and having this robotic type of stroke wastes a lot of energy… energy that doesn’t move your body any faster through the water. Pointing your elbows will teach you to rotate your hips and your shoulders so that your arm that is in the water can reach as far as possible and pull as much water as possible.

Janet Evans’ freestyle looks similar to a windmill and she still holds world records in a couple of distance events.

Don’t analyze or mimic people’s strokes by what they look like out of the water… swimming is all underwater…

yes. I think the word you’re searching for is "breakout "
