Ventum One - BikeRadar review - Slower than Orbea Ordu m20i ltd

Hi guys,
Very interesting review of the uber-bike Ventum One by the BikeRadar youtube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asDhQA_SDyY

An overall impressive bike, very responsive, but they found some issues with lack of torsional stiffness.
Most importantly, they found it slower than an UCI-legal Orbea Ordu m20i ltd, in two separate circuit types.

Rodrigo Valle

Why am I not surprised?

Are any beam bikes any faster than a IA or SC? Doubt it.

Any review that claims to substantiate “stiffness” gets a big asterisk in my book.

Also, when he’s discussing the rear “triangle” area flexing (i.e. not having enough torsional stiffness to counteract the rear axle and BB wanting to move independntly) it’s more likely the fact that he’s got a deep aero wheel with a low spoke count; i.e. it’s the wheels “fault” not the bike’s fault.

Furthermore, saying that it’s SLOWER because it was 7-24s slower over 10 miles in the “real world” is basically laughable.

No, it’s a true statement. It was slower.
For them, with their test protocol and conditions.
In terms of making an overall conclusion about the Ventum it’s not sufficient. More trials, more riders, proof of how the positions have been matched etc would be needed to validate the initial conclusion.
At this stage it’s more of a pilot study.

The Ordu OMP is one of the top few frames for low yaw, shame for Ventum that BR didn’t pick a Shiv.

if it weren’t for people actually taking something like this seriously, it is laughable that they present this as some sort of “test.” It’s a farce. The fact that they don’t even realize that the same average power could yield different results even if every other variable was held precisely constant (which they absolutely did not do) depending on how that power was distributed shows how idiotic this is. As for the discussion of “frame flex,” this is why, generally speaking, engineers hate journalists.

Seeing shit like this is just so depressing…

Technically yes, definitely correct on that correction. My point is more what you are saying, however, I just didn’t word it as well…

Should have been:

“saying that it’s an inherently slower bicycle beause it was 7-24s slower over 10 miles in their real world tests against one other bike is basically laughable.” or what you said ha

Which one is it BikeRadar, ProCycling, CyclingNews, TriRadar?

“As for the discussion of “frame flex,” this is why, generally speaking, engineers hate journalists.”

i’m happy to point out, to anyone who’s interested, cases when more rather than less frame flex makes the bike (in my opinion) worse.

More about the ‘system’, no?

Meh…I’m willing to lose a few seconds for the cool factor. There will always be faster bikes!

Well, sure 10 seconds isn’t much, but if the Ventum One was so much more aero, shouldn’t it be noticeably FASTER than the Ordu?..

Rodrigo

Their testing methods reminds me of the “science” fools use to prove the Earth is flat. Such as, “If the Earth was round, buildings on the horizon would be leaning away from you. But they’re NOT.” Sheesh.

This test is idiotic, even by the standards of YouTube cycling video channels (at least GCN are entertaining).

Agreed

They should do a very “engineering” type of test like Cervelo to make the bike they want faster! hahahaha

“It’s important to note this for everything claimed about this bike: Cervelo is not testing bare bikes. They’re testing fully loaded bikes, that is, bikes that carry a typical Ironman payload: X ounces of water, Y amount of food and so forth.”

That and they don’t try to review stuff, which I appreciate. They have sponsors but don’t claim they are the best things out there and everything else sucks.

And they list all the ways their tests suck in humorous fashion. But they still often have results plausible enough to make you think. (IMO)

Thought the big selling point of the ventum was the built in hydration. Add 1.5 litres of liquid storage to the ordu and I’m sure it would be a bit slower. Does confirm again that the performance difference claims in top end bike frames in the real world is so over exaggerated though…

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that the Ventum is not one of the most aero bikes out there.

It is one of the best looking though. I could care less about shaving 45 seconds off my bike split…I just want to look cool!
