Is anybody using Veloplugs on Zipp 404 NSW wheels? It seems that the largest Veloplug (fits up to 9.3mm spoke hole) is too small for the 404 NSW (spoke hole ~ 9.5mm). I was considering alternatives to rim strips, but it doesn’t look like these will fit. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Brian
I use Veloplugs on my 202s. You’re right, the largest ones don’t fit well. I used super glue to hold them in at first but sometimes they would still fall out when changing a flat so then I covered them in a single layer of electrical tape. Still lighter than a rim strip.
Hello durk onion and All,
A little goober of tubular mastic holds them nicely.

Skip the Veloplugs and go straight to Stan’s Rim Tape. Not sure what you want to accomplish with Veloplugs, but I have done it and I always resort back to rim tape. Rim tape is NOT rim strips.

I use the yellow veloplugs and they fit my 303 NSW and 808 NSW perfectly (so I would assume the 404 would be the same)

I use veloplugs on our zipps (red plugs, AL rims).
In my view, the big advantage is not actually the rotating weight reduction. The bigger advantage is, when installing or removing a tire, or when fixing a flat, the bead of a tight tire can rest right against the actual rim bed and, as a result, the tire becomes noticeably easier to install or take off. By avoiding rim tape, the rim has a smaller effective diameter which means the tire bead will not be as tight during install/removal.
Then, it just seems so odd to use rim tape over a rim bed that is mostly solid material, as there are very few holes to cover (i.e., my front rim has only has just 16 spoke holes). But for a 32-spoke training wheel, then the tape just seems like a better solution (plus my bigger training tires are quite a bit looser, so no worries about the rim bed diameter).
I’ll add that the SILCA rim tape is both thinner and lighter than Stan’s so 2 wraps will be ~7-8 grams on that rim and allow you to run latex inner tubes without worry about heat issues from the the latex touching the raw carbon, or of the latex being damaged by an edge of the hole plug. Plus the very low thickness of the tape allows for much easier tube/tire install.

Yep, you may or may not know but I did purchase some SILCA tape in both the 21mm versions and 25mm versions and I have been using it on my HED JET+ rims and ENVE 7 SES which are some of the tightest in the industry. Frankly, I have never run the Stan’s on those rims so I can’t compare if the thinness is add to it. I do like that the Silca tape is slightly transparent so you can see things like serial numbers on the rim bed if need be.
Which width are you running on the Jet+?

I have done different setups. I have run the 21mm right down the middle for one layer, then a second 25mm layer over the top. Mike Alexander knows my weight weenies tendencies to an extreme. I have done double 25mm. I have done one layer of squares over the spokes holes and then a full layer of 25mm. I think Iike the 21mm one layer, 25mm second layer as my go-to choice.
Hello joshatsilca and All,
OK, OK … you and Thomas have convinced me to try your tape on my next new rims … always looking for a better way
I am basically lazy and it should be a lot quicker than to put on your tape than insert each of the Velo plugs.
