Velocity wheel question

I’ve been looking at a few different models on the website and was hoping to get some opinions/information. I’m looking at 3 different models right now. The Spartacus, Spartacus Pro and the new Uriel (not yet on the web site). The Uriel is the the Fusion rim, with the same spoke count/pair spoke set up of the Spartacus line. The main difference between the Spartacus and the S Pro is the Pro has machined sidewalls and bladed spokes. The Uriel is the same as the Pro but lighter and not as deep sectioned. So, here’s the questions: Does the machined walls make a real difference in braking power? And between the Pro and the Uriel, what would be the better choice for a 650c tri bike riding only in the MD/DC/VA area?

Thanks in advance.

Are you going to use the wheels for racing or training? (Staying clear of the tubular debate!!!) I would say that they are good training wheels or maybe an entry level race wheel.

As for the sidewalls. I use the velocity wheels without the machined sidewalls and have no problem with braking power. Of course the bladed spokes would be a little more aero but may not be needed for training (except for the coolness factor). I heard the Spartacus wheels are very durable. I like the way the tire mounts on the rim, very seamless, I use the Michelin Pro-Race for tires.

My 2 cents

I just picked up a set of the Spartacus Tyro from SpinLite, as seen below. I can’t compare them to the others in question, but I can say I’ve not had any problems with braking. Seems to be a very strong wheel. Weight is 890g and 1144g, FYI. Good luck.

Machined sidewalls do not make a big performance difference. The main difference is that a machined rim will wear out faster since it has been ground down.

Assuming you will be using the wheels for racing, get the deepest rims you can find because it will be the fastest.

Thanks to everyone who replied. You’ve answered my questions perfectly. I am planning on using them for racing as well as training some. I personally don’t believe that I will notice any difference in aerodynamics with the bladed spokes since I will rarely go faster than 22-23 mph during any of my triathlons. Since all models use the same hub, and I ride mostly flat surfaces, I plan on going with the Spartacus model. I just can’t seem to find a wheel that is comparable at that price range, so that’s what I am going with. For those wondering about the weight of the wheels, in 650c (the size I need) they are rear: 982g and front 768g. Not too shabby for a fairly aero clincher.
