Its a bit of a rookie question, but does anyone use 80mm stem tubes without extenders on 60mm deep rims? 80mm is the longest stem length I could find and I want to make sure its long enough for pumping. Also, how would you put extenders on smooth valves?
80mm will work.
I just installed tubes with 80mm stems on my Jet 6’s.
88mm > 60mm, so yes.
Touche I just edited my question to make clear that what I wanted to find out is whether the 80mm stem will be long enough for pumping without using extenders. B/c even if the stem is longer than the rim depth, there may not be enough poking through to use a pump on it properly.
Well, the total wheel depth is 60mm. Then factor in the 5 to 10mm depth of the tire channel. You should have about 25 to 30mm sticking out, at least an inch. That is more than enough.
Perfect! I’m getting a pair of the Jet 6 and didn’t want to mess than the valve extenders…
In general, yes, but you should try it out in advance of a race. On some tubes, the 80mm valve is a bit + or minus 80mm (discovered this last year two days before racing my 66mm wheels!).
I have a Hed Jet 60 front wheel and use a Conti Race Lite tube with a 80mm valve stem. Works fine. Plenty of room for the pump head.
