Valve Extenders (7)

Hi

So i run Hed Jets 60/90 combo and use Topeak valve extenders, which i find really unreliable, and not trustworthy in a race.

They are made of fairly soft metal which easily gets loose if i over tighten at all. What are the best valve extenders i can use, i’d love something more solid, but havent found anything. Or is there a step i’m not missing, should i be taping these things to the valve, which then means i have to carry tape during a race.

Help

thanks

I’m not really sure why you would carry tape in a race. I install my extenders and leave them on forever. There are basicly two types -Zipp type, which is just a hollow tube you screw on to the valve (preferrably pretire install so you can tape the threads) and the Tufo type which you remove the valve itself and relocate it to the top of the extender. Most of the Tufo type have a little rubber o-ring to seal the connection. I vastly prefer the Tufo type since it allows you access to the valve and is prone to far fewer leaks at the seam.

But if i need to change a flat in a race, im going to have to switch the extender, no? or do i install extenders on tubes i carry?

or do i install extenders on tubes i carry?

Bingo!

zipps seem to be working fine for me.
if you don’t have a pressure relief valve on your pump you’ll have to use a paperclip or something to let air out, or just don’t overinflate in the 1st place.
use some teflon tape & pinch the core so it doesn’t fall back in…all set.

I use the zipp valve extenders on my race wheels mostly because it’s easier to find latex tubes when you’re not worried about if they have removable valves or not. For my spare I carry a tube with the bontrager extender installed which is the type that relocates the valve to the top (http://bontrager.com/model/04467), I use that type for the spare because I have more faith that it won’t give me a hassle with the co2 cartridge whenI go to reinflate.

Bingo!

The problem with that is if you run a Jet 60 or 90 in front and a disk in the back, you need an extender for the front, but a short stem for the disk.

Carry two tubes.

i do carry 2 tubes. and will just tape long extensions to both.

thanks, problem solved.

Carry two tubes.

Have you seen my flat kit? Two tubes is not an option. I just unscrew the extender on the spare tube if the disk flats.

What kind of tape is it?

teflon plumber’s tape. works like a charm to prevent air leakage from the valve extender.

I was asking sneakerchimp what tape he was using.

Oh, sorry, I thought this was an open forum. I’ll stop trying to be helpful now. OK, maybe just one more time…

There’s this cool thing, that if you want to ask ONLY ONE PERSON something, in private, you can do so.

Interesting POV.
I have those guys on same tubes for maybe 2 years now.

in the zipp extenders…and most others for that matter, the head (where you put the air in) is designed so an allen wrench fits right into it. I carry 2 tubes, and teflon tape the tubes in my flat kit. I flatted 2x at IMKY last year and used the allen wrench to remove the extender and put it on the new tube…which were pre-wrapped with the teflon tape.

ok
i got some teflon plumber tape. how much should i use? im having trouble getting what i think is a good seal with it, then it not fitting through my race wheels. Is twice around enough?

I would go around 3-4 time with it, sometimes more, you will be surprised how thin it is, you should have no problem getting the extender on or fitting the tube through the rim.

Wrap aroung the valve about four times. Then, I also twist the Teflon tape into a “string” and wrap it around the base of the threads to create sort of an o-ring. Then wrap a couple more times around.

Never had a leak in almost 25 years.
