Just got myself a Jet 6/9 Combo and have never dealt with valve extenders. They came with extenders and I’ve got 32 mm (valve) latex tubes I’m planning on using with them. Anyone have suggestions for me about valve extenders in general? Should I use the stock ones? Are the other, better choices (rather than what comes with the wheels?

don’t use those extenders.
buy tubes with removable cores and then buy valve extensions like this http://www.amazon.com/Challenge-Presta-Bicycle-Valve-Extenders/dp/B0026N5N4M/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_3
I’ve had good luck with Topeak.

I’d assume you’d throw an extender on any spares you had for a race, these type with the removable cores appear like they’d be a pain in the ass to deal with in a race if you had to change them…
Yeah, you’d put those on and pray you don’t flat.
The replaceable core extenders are the $h&t. I wouldn’t use anything else.

I use a stock valve extender. It’s a pita to deal with, but when you get it right, it works OK. You have to make sure that the valve is open whenever you attach the extender and sometimes you will even have to unscrew the extender and use it to pop the seal on the valve and then screw it back on to be able to put air in it. This is done, of course, completely by feel. And even then, sometimes it will be airing up the tire, but the gauge won’t read it correctly (be careful, I’ve popped a tube doing this and was lucky not to damage the wheel). On the plus side, I’ve gotten pretty good at comparing how a tire feels to try to get the correct air in it.
+1
Only I’d use TUFO extenders - their tires may not be much good (for racing anyway) but their extenders are among the best available. My experience anyway, and I’ve tried a bunch of them…

I put this together a few months ago…
http://youtu.be/Sx8aLQBPD-M. My recommendations should be nearly identical for the 60mm and 90mm HED Jet wheels.
I hope this helps,
I have the same wheel combo as you and this is what worked best for me. For the front wheel I use a Conti Race Light tube with a 80mm stem. No valve extender required. For the rear I use a Conti Race Light tube with a 60mm valve and use a Vittoria 62mm valve extender. Works great. The Conti tube has a removeable valve stem and the Vitt extender has a rubber O ring that really makes a great seal. Just unscrew the valve stem from the Conti and screw it into the end of the Vittoria extender.

And what do you do for your spare during a race?

Awesome, thanks, for the record, these wheels are a place holder until I can get my Flos! What’s up men!
My spare is setup the same as my rear wheel with the valve extender. If I have to use it on the front it just makes for a super longer valve but my race is probably over anyway. If doing a IM I would probably have two spare tubes. One for the front(80mm) and one setup for the rear(60mm tube plus extender).

Correct. I carry one spare tube with the longer extender that fits the Jet 9, so it’ll work with either that or the Jet 6. Although, it really wouldn’t take much more time to install the extender. You can tighten/loosen it most of the time with your fingers, if not there is a little tool that comes with the extenders you could use.
I use the Zipp extenders that came on my wheels. At first it was a PITA and I was going to get rid of them however the secret to using them successfully is to first make sure your valves are completely open, then apply teflon tape on the valve threads but the most important part is to make sure you don’t place the hand pump thumb lock all the way down until it stops. The Zipp extenders have grooves at the very end and this where you place the valve/thumb lock. It looks like it will fall off but you won’t get any air leakage from the pump (or Co2 if you flatted on the road) and you will get accurate readings from your gauge. At least this worked for me.
Use the Tufo’s as others have said. Put it on your spare as well.
Trust me now, believe me later.
+3 on the tufo’s
.
Ok. So I found the TUFOs on line. The question now is what size extender. Ive got a virtual bike shop worth of tubes at my house so I’m trying to figure out how far the valve should extend beyond the rim? 20mm? 30mm? I’ve got a bunch of 32 mm latex tubes so would a 70mm extender be ok? Generally speaking?m going forward what is the best combo? 60mm tube stem with 60 mm extender for 30 mm over the rim?
Any suggestion on the best place to buy the extenders?
For a jet 6/9 combo, a 40mm on the fr and a 75mm on the rear is what is recommended by hed, with 32mm valves on your tubes should be ample http://www.hedcycling.com/wheel-acc/default.asp?content=Valve_Extenders
.
I’m planing on having a flo 60 and flo 90. Would it be easiest to pack a spare with an extender that will fit my flo 90? Or is swapping extenders something I should plan on doing on the roadside?

If you don’t use extenders and you run out of spares on a ride then you will be calling for a ride home.
I use extenders and when properly applied they work fine. If I burn through all my spares I can still grab a tube from someone and make it home.
