Using two “connector links” on a connex / wippermann chain

I have a wippermann race chain that was cut/sized for my old bike. My current bike has a slightly longer chainstay and necessitates a chain that is 1 link longer.

I can’t find the links of the original chain that I had trimmed off. Is it possible/advisable/unadvisable to use a second “connector link” to make up this difference in length?

Would be fine

I love wippermann chains and have used them for years (and will continue using them as long as I can find them at a decent price). With that said, I have had 2 instances where a slack chain has caused the connector link to disconnect/break (not sure what happened first as I was not watching it), with once during a race. Yes, they were installed in the proper direction (they are of course directional), and it was the correct size…so I would just caution that you make sure that your connectors are not worn and ‘loose’. The thing that I love about their connectors is that you can easily take them apart to clean…but this is also a potential source of failure (with emphasis on potential…again, I am still using them when I can afford to).

I have two links on a chain that I race gravel on. So far no issues.

I should say, no issues after I put some distance between the links. I would skip every once in a while when both links were wrapped around the cassette and under load. So, I added maybe 4” of chain and cut an equal amount off the longer chain. Issue resolved.

I use the wipperman link.

I think there was a YouTube video of a guy who made an entire chain out of quick links. But couldn’t find it to post.

I’ve been riding like this for the last month or so. I have a PremierBike Optimized chain that I must have used before I used on my track bike or maybe without oversized pulleys. Anyway I’m running two quick links with a handful of other links in between. It’s been great so far.

How would you lengthen a chain with a connector link and no extra chain links?

Can’t do it that way since you need the inner links. You need two lengths of chain. As someone else said, I’d try to keep the links far apart from one another so that they’re not on the small cog or pully at the same time.
