Using IM points for charity pledges

Hey guys - just putting this out to see if anyone had experience with this. There’s a local charity my wife and I volunteer with and we’re good friends with the charity’s leadership.

We were discussing the idea of me raising money for them by getting people to pledge 1 cent (or more if they want) for every “point” I get in a given M-dot race. I typically get 3rd-7th AG and am a reliable 70.3 worlds qualifier and Kona cusp-dweller, so as a pledge idea it works with the way I approach racing and has the potential to raise a decent amount of money for a charity we reallly love. The more cents people pledge per point, or the faster I go, the more $$$ the charity ends up getting.

A potential issue I see with this is it’s not an “official” Ironman charity, but I’m using Ironman’s points system for my pledge campaign that I plan to publicly advertise via social media. Is this something the M-dot overlords would (or have) take issue with?

Just curious whether others have tried this and if this became an issue. Let’s face it, I’m doing these stupid races no matter what, so it would be cool if I could have some of that effort end up helping a worthy cause.

I wouldn’t see why. No difference in my mind than saying pledge dollars matching my finish, or heck even just doing it. People do it all the time

I would think you’d be ok as long as you don’t imply that Ironman is sponsoring or doing anything official with the “event” you are doing.
