Using honey instead of gels

Has anyone experimented with using honey instead of gels? I did a little research and found that with raw honey and Hammer Strengths Endurolytes, I can get the nutrients very close to the Honey Stinger gels. And since my family has been beekeeping for over 30 years, it would be a great way to save some money.

Honey is a quick way for energy. I say go for it.

I’m sure it would be fine. The only advantage I see in gels is that they come in little prepackeged dispoasble packets. There’s nothing special about the gel itself, which is essentially flavored maltodextrin. If you prefer using gel containers, honey should be fine as long as you don’t mind the sweetness.

I have been using the Honey Stinger Gels for a couple months now and have been impressed with them. I was originally a waffle and chew user and then got hooked on their gels as well. Helps that through sponsorship I get a good deal on their products, but either way they are huge supporters of Team RWB and Military Members, and they have great products.

add a bit of salt and its basically chemically identical to gels, so yes, no reason why not. I know some extremely talented bike racers that use a concoction like that for road racing.

another clever idea I’ve seen from a nationally competitive cat 1 woman - sweet potato in her jersey pocket. no wrapper. just grab and eat.

2 words…bug puke.
sorry, that’s all I can think of with honey :frowning:

well the gu’s are ground up corn chemically altered in a huge chemical factory.

one way or another you got yourself some chemical factory (bees or man made labs) turning plants into fructose/glucose mixtures.

drafting off that could be dangerous. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve done it many times. Used it for about three years.

I’d would cut it one to one with water and put in a gel flask. Worked fine for olympic and to an extent for half iron.

I have since gone to taking a 24 oz gatorade bottle and adding enough maltodextrin to make it abot 700 calories. The chasing that with water.

But actually last year I went out of town for a workout, forgot my maltodextrin and went to the store and got some honey to use instead.

It didn’t work as well as my normal drink but it was OK as a backup plan.

are sweet potatos known to make you poot?

When running marathons I prefer the little honey packets. I’m fairly prone to GI distress, so if I have one too many GU packets I feel the pain for a long time. However, if I take one too many honey packets it’s just a mile or so of mild discomfort before I recover. I just take one honey package every ten minutes or so until my stomach begins to rumble. Then I’ll skip a feeding or two before resuming.

If I’m just running for training I just grab a few of the packets, but for the race I take a pair of scissors and get each packet started with a small cut that doesn’t quite get to the honey reservoir.

Pure and natural. Get an efs liquid shot flask or something similar and fill it from the hive.

Wow, that’s really smart; plus it gives me a reason to go to KFC.

KFC honey probably isn’t really honey - heard about this on NPR: http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/11/tests-show-most-store-honey-isnt-honey/
.

I’m able to consume almost anything while I’m riding my bike without any issues, but for a race my coach was cheap and added honey to our bottles instead of powder drink mix and I couldn’t stand the taste.

cooked or raw?

I’d have to do triathlon just to burn off all the honey I’d be eating if I had that kind of connection. Send some of that my way!

wow, Great post ¡£first time I heard this with honey instead of gel, good idea, I like to drink the honey, because it can and beauty.

Honey has a very high fructose content.
