Using Eggbeaters with Specialized Carbon soled MTB shoes?

Anybody running the eggbeater w/a carbon-soled Specialized MTB shoe?

If so, are you using a protective metal plate between the shoe and cleat (to protect the carbon from being scarred)?

I’ll have to check my shoes when I get home, but I am actually using this set up and have for the last 5 years. I haven’t had any issues with it, or damage to the sole of my shoes. In case you’re curious, I just changed my cleats out from the egg beaters to shimano spd’s for spin class/indoor trainers about a month and a half ago. Still didn’t see any damage to the sole. If you’d like, I can take pictures tonight/tomorrow of the bottom of the shoes.

I don’t mtn bike anymore, but I used to really into it, and I was always a big fan of Eggbeaters…

I believe Crank Bros started making a plate of their own some time ago, but wayyy back in the day, there was a guy on eBay that sold cleat plates for cheap (he machined 'em himself), and those were awesome - they did the job perfectly. I’m sure the Crank Bros plates are the same thing, but they probably cost cost 4x as much

At any rate, I considered those plates a very worthwhile investment.

Cheers, Chris

It’d be to know how they are holding up… I only just got the shoes and I know they’ll get beat on but I don’t want to ruin the soles - scratches aren’t a big deal but a crack is.

I totally understand wanting to protect the investment I should have pics up by tomorrow evening for you.

Thanks- it’d be nice to hear (see) an actual user’s experience.

Fwiw, I called two local Specialized shops and got two different answers:

-“Yes use the plate.”

-“No, it’s no big deal; in fact the Spd cleat is worse and your shoes will wear out before the carbon is ever damaged”

From person experience, I’m leaning more towards what store number two has said. I’ve gone on rides with a loose cleat, get flipped over the bars sideways on single track, having to dig my heel into the side of the mountain to keep from rolling about 100 feet downhill without any damage to the pedal, shoes, or cleat itself. The shoes and the pedals are bulletproof.

No issues for many many years. S-works shoes and eggbeaters on race bike (candy SL on other mountain bike)

If you like your shoes you’ll use them
