Use a mountain bike stem on a Road bike?

Hey guys i am messing with my bike fit to try to figure out what my limits are and what is comfortable for my bike fit.

I am out of spacers and am really comfy. so… lets go lower. however looking at it i figure i would have to either get a low rise headset top cap or a negatively angled stem.

When asking some guys on my cycling team about a negative stem they tell me the lowest you can go is 17 degrees but i know the LBS has some that are 24 and 35 and 40. These however are meant for mountain bike applications.

Is there any reason i wouldnt be able to use a flipped 110x24 or a 110x 40 on my road/tri bike? It is 1 1/8 inch threadless and is 31.8 handlebars.

Ran one on my First bike (S32) for over a year with no problems at all. It was a much cheaper option than something like a LOOK Ergostem. You could probably find some Track Stems that have a pretty massive drop on them too.

I did just that once upon a time and it works fine. Another option between that and the Look Ergostem is to use an adjustable angle stem like ones available from Ritchey or Oval. I used a Ritchey on a former tri bike that I had when I wanted to get my front end lower. Works really well and gives you the advantage of trying several rise angles very easily without having to mess with handlebar re-installation.

Plenty of companies make stems with a negative 40 degree rise that are meant for road use. I currently ride with a Bontrager stem that is 90mm length with negative 40 rise. You can get such a stem from Bontrager, Ritchey, Origin8, Dimension, and a few other companies as well.

Not at all an issue in any way.
