USCF changes rules (again)?

It appears that the USCF rule that requires all bicycles to adhere to UCI rules as of 1/2007 (seat setback, wheel covers, double diamond, etc.) has been eliminated. As the poster boy for non-conformation, I applaud the decision.

If this is accurate: AMEN!

If this is accurate: AMEN!
Accurate? As accurate as the day is long!

Why?? do you know the reason, man i bet Bunnyman just wet his pants,Great maybe i can still ride my funny bike.

I, too, applaud this, if indeed it is accurate. The only answer I’ve gotten that is supported is that the verbage that said the rule change would go into effect in 2007 has been removed for 2005.

In beaurocrat-ese that could also mean it’s effective immediately.

I guess I’ll find that out on Sunday…

This has stemmed from among other things, Curtis Gunn’s attack on the hour record. The equipment needed for him to make that attempt, or for me to qualify for Elite Track nationals did not need to be UCI legal. The world cup guys ride and train on UCI legal stuff so USCF guys would have an advantage because they don’t race with the big fish.

I don’t know why all the backlash over the UCI rules. The line needs to be drawn somewhere.

Here is some correspondence I have had with USA cycling….

Dear Brady,

In the fall of 2003, the USCF board of trustees passed legislation that was to have all bicycles become UCI compliant by 2007. However, in the fall of 2004, the board modified that decision and decided that UCI compliant bicycles were only important for international races, qualification events for international races, and for records. The rule was rewritten for the 2005 rulebook. Thus, as of right now, a traditional frame bike based on the double triangle design is required for all UCI calendar races, all national championships for Elite men and women, U23, and junior 17-18 that are qualifiers for international races, and for all records set.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Shawn,

I was scanning some of the forums this morning and came across the following link.

After reading the thread it does not seem to come to any real conclusion. There are few other forums with similar buzz out here. Can you clear this up for us? I work for Softride Inc. www.softride.com So yes, this ruling does affect my company from a monetary stand point.

I was under the impression from the 2004 rule book that non UCI compliant bikes, e.g. Softride, Zipp, Trek Y foil, were banned starting in 2007. Is this still true? Or is it just as you 2005 rules read, only for international races??

I talked with a race promoter yesterday that had JUST gone thorugh the USCF Ref seminar the previous week. One of the comments made was that, yes indeed, the full UCI regulations will be enforced as regards bicycle design as of 2007. So there seems to be some dissention within the USCF ranks (which should come as no surprise).

Unfortunately, this change has not been made very clear.
