A USATF sanctioned race, means every runner is covered under insurance, no need to buy membership. So, because USAT is charging us for membership/day pass (insurance), does that mean the RD is not paying for insurance… or RD is paying and we are getting essentially double charged (race reg + “membership”)
A USATF sanctioned race, means every runner is covered under insurance, no need to buy membership.
And that’s where the difference is end of story. USAT race you have to be an member, whether annual or 1 day member. End of story.

So RD pays for insurance, where cost is passed on to us, then we pay another fee for supplemental insurance?
then we pay another fee for supplemental insurance?
When or what is this? I’ve never heard of that.
There are two insurances… there’s the insurance protecting the RD from liability, and the insurance protecting you in the case of injury or worse… The sanction fee covers the insurance for them, along with provision of officials, etc. the one-day membership (or annual membership), covers the insurance protecting you…
Cycling works similar to triathlon, I assume it’s largely because they are higher risk… when running in a USATF or an IAAF sanctioned race, there’s no insurance provided in case something happens to you, you’re on your own…

Ok it’s a liability thing then. USATF doesn’t require the supplemental insurance while USAT forces it on you. Hmm
Where are you paying the supplemental insurance at per race?
Where are you paying the supplemental insurance at per race?
One day pass or annual membership.
Right but doesnt that membership (whether 1 day or annual) pay for your right to be a member of an organization that then allows you to race?
I always hear “what’s the point of usat membership” and the most basic #1 advantage- it gives you access to thousands of races across the US. There’s probaly 1% of races that dont require the membership.
Your still not showing me where RD’s are “double” charging?
This risk is far greater in triathlon. I’m sure insurance is higher as well because of this
So, using your form of logic, every USA Swimming and ever US Masters Swimming competitor is being double billed. To race in those sanctioned meets you must be a member.
No one forces you to compete in USAT sanctioned events. You won’t be banned by competing in a non-sanctioned event. A race director has made a business decision to sanction. USAT hasn’t forced this decision to be made. One can simply chose to find another race. USATF doesn’t sanction most running races. You’ve left out RRCA.

I want to race with out paying more to USAT. A USAT sanctioned race, as I do not have the funds to fly across the country for the 1% non USAT sanctioned. Part of my race entry already goes to the RD’s liability insurance (and you know that cost is passed on to us in registration)
USAT sanctions 99% of all triathlons & duathlons!?
Me thinks thou protest too much…
Before USAT invasion, local series here was $120 last minute vs $200 now. So prices for races are up 40% across the board. Many talented locals getting shut out. A 19:59 5k runner can podium over all yet there is a big pool of sub 18 min 5k people here… to me that is a problem.

How much of that increase is USAT and how much just SD gouging more though?
And I agree, the races around San Diego have gotten absurd price wise.
what’s the time period of that 40% increase?
~ 4 years ago for past 2-3 years, when RD went with USAT sanctioning. This is just one example though. I am also disappointed my club tri races died from what was 6-8 to only 2 in the late fall now
What did race numbers do? Increase or decrease from non USAT to USAT sanctioned?
Decrease… Especially top end competitors
