I have many helmets … all of them from Europe (sorry, I’m belgian and I moved from there to Canada a while ago).
Also, I shop in Europe lots when I go back there to visit family.
So 2 years ago, I won a little triathlon in TupperLake, NY … but got DQ because my helmet was not CPSC approved ! Nice … I got told to change my helmet as I was in my wetsuit 15min before the race :)))
My helmet was a GIRO (MADE IN USA) but with CE logo (euro version of the Advantage)
I also have SCOTT and MET helmets all CE approved but with no CPSC stickers in it. I’m about to race in USA again and was looking at the USAT rules.
and sooooo … the Europeans helmets are still not approved …
I found that really interesting since on the other side, USA Cycling is allowing the European helmets (CE stickers).
I also find this annoying - I want to wear my Rudi Syton Open (bought here in the UK) at IMAZ - it is exactly the same as sold in the US, it says CPSC approved on the box and in the instruction manual, but it has a CE sticker instead of a CPSC sticker.
It is almost impossible to find any helmet for sale in the UK that has a CPSC sticker.
Looking forward to when USAT adopts the USA Cycling helmet rule…
From what I understand, USA Cycling will not accept the European standards after January 1, 2010. I was looking at buying a Catlike for Bike racing but didnt because of that.
It looks like just the opposite is happening. From the USA Cycling rules:
“Beginning January 1, 2010, only the DOT and CPSC helmet standards will be recognized.”
As for your Rudi Syton Open, some thoughts:
take a picture of your helmet alongside the box, with the CPSC approved wording in the picture.
bring along the manual too.
drop an email to Rudi and see if they will say in writing something like: “your helmet does meet the CPSC standards, it’s just we didn’t put the sticker in it because we knew it was going to the European market”.
That may be sufficient proof if your helmet gets questioned.

Here’s a suggestion… If it is a helmet that is sold here ie Rudy, Giro etc. Look inside of your road helmet that you don’t use for Tris peel the sticker out of the inside and paste it in the TT helmet. Problem solved.

Maybe Rudy would be willing to send him a sticker? Worth a shot whats the worst that can happen, they say no?
