Nice video of the finish. It’s always cool to see such a long race still be so close at the very end…
What? You kidding me? That was freakin’ awesome! I’ve been doing the 3 tri disciplines for a long time, and while I am strongest on the run, nothing inspires me more than a strong swimmer. I do enjoy watching le Tour, Kona, and some marathons, but nothing gives me chills like a close swim comp. I am from Sth. Jersey, you wouldn’t think it, but that area is huge in OWS. AC was home to the Around the Island swim in A.C., I think it’s no longer held for some reason.
What did I see that Gary has been talking about. High turn over. Keeping the hand out of the water until basically ready to start the high elbow. That much energy after a 10K, amazing.

I was riding on the referee boat and watched this race up close. Let me say, It was inspiring. To get an appreciation for what a brutal fight it was, check out this video of the first turn. This contact lasted the entire 10,000 meters.

The point about fast turn over is right on. Notice that Chip (the guy who breaks first) turned on an 8 beat kick a bit early (he has a great hip driven stroke). Fran, stayed right with him, in perfect drafting position. When it was time, Fran increased his stroke rate from earlier in the race at 82 to almost 110. Perfect front quadrant / shoulder driven freestyle.
Another note on strategy, in the men’s race they split the last 2,000 meters over a minute faster than the first 2,000 meters.
It is hard for us mortals to imagine what is required to swim like this after swimming fast for two hours. We can all learn from it.
The link to the article on that site does not work
.
hopefully working now
