Guys—important question for today: while wearing tights for winter running, do you wear shorts over them, or just go with the Superhero, tights-only look?
I’ve never viewed myself as especially modest, but boy, those running tights sure are tight where it counts.
Never ever go shorts over tights. Get something to support the boys, running underwear exists and any running shop, MEC/REI, etc. I’m using Brooks Runderwear, has a windscreen too. If it’s really cold (-10C), use your tri-shorts.
Brooks used to make something called “Runderwear” that is a cool max like material cut like an athletic high-hip style–which is also double-fronted & on the anti-chaffe side (not entirely but vaseline works well). I just found a pair on the clearance rack at Ross in Kona in October (by chance) for about $5.00 (normally they’d be like $15+), but this pair was made by Champion. Check Road Runner Sports, they may have something similar. I haven’t seen the Brooks Runderwear in a long time so not sure if they still make it. Anyhow, use them on every run…from 100+ heat in the summer to winter with fleece lined tights, or even while xc skiing. If it is really cold, then add Craft wind-panel front biker-like shorts (I think they’re called “Gunde” shorts…) named after the pre-Bjorn Dahle era of the 80’s Super Man nordic skier himself Gunde Svan of Sweden.
I’ve become a fan of the “track pant”… have 1 pair from Brooks and 1 from SportHill - they’re tapered leg and stretchy like a tight, but not too snug/form-fitting, so you can wear regular running or tri shorts underneath w/o bunching, yet they’re still more trim fit than your normal warm-up style pants so there’s no flappy cuffs when you run. I’ll wear tights under those if it’s really cold. They also typically have pockets, nice for something minimal like an ID.
I rarely - like once or twice a year - wear tights. I wear pants. If it’s really really cold I might wear tights under the pants.
If I ever wear tights on the outside like in a race, I always wear shorts over them. There are some visions I do not wish to inflict upon the rest of the world.
