Upgrading to HED

I am looking to upgrade from a pretty standard, low end Superteam carbon wheelset (both front and back around 58mm I think?) to a set of HED Jet RC Black Series (60/90).

Thoughts on how worth it a $1700 upgrade is?

I know nothing about the wheels you’re looking to replace, but can say with all certainty that the wheels you’re looking to buy are a great all-around choice. Assuming you’re talking about the Black series being the ones with the special brake track treatment and not just black decals, you’ll wonder why anyone ever thought disc brakes were necessary.

I had the same wheelset on my previous rim brake bike. Very nice wheelset for the price and as Mudge stated the braking is excellent.

I bought that set as a safe “all winds” race set and I was happy with it. My wife stole them and I bought a 90/disc from HED. I’m super happy with it but when the winds get high I move down to the 60 and my wife rides an 18mm front.

I have the superteams 50s carbon brake track. They’re scarily cheap, but perform impressively well - if you were going to 50mm HEDs, I’d say you’d get minimal gains.

You’ll def go slightly faster with a 60/90 though, regardless of manufacturer.

But the real reasons to get the HED black for $1700 extra:

  1. Alloy BLACK rim braking. Rim brakes still >> carbon brakes in all situations, and black rim on the wheels just looks sweet.
  2. HED reliability and quality. You’ll pay a premium but if anything goes wrong, you’ve got HED to back it.

If it’s ust disposable income for you, get the HEDs, and don’t look back, I’m sure you’ll love them.

If it’s NOT disposable income, and have no problems with carbon braking on your Superteams, you can actually get a pair of 88/88 carbon wheels online from various sources for $400 range, which will probably give you 97%+ as much speed as the 60/90 HEDs.

I actually like having multiple wheelsets for my rim-brake road TT bikes, and didn’t want to spend $10k in wheels to do it, so I have:

  • 50 mm carbon brake surface (honestly I rarely use this anymore, have gotten used to winds with deeper wheels, was really my ‘test’ pair of wheels to see if Superteams would be disastrous, or if I would hate deep wheels.)
  • 50 mm ALLOY brake surface (mainly for my road bike which I use for mountain climbs as the alloy braking is a lot better on steep descents)
  • 88 mm pair carbon brake surface (my preferred training set on TT bike on nonmountain terrain). I honestly have this pair mainly because my RD barely hits my disc wheel on steep climbs, so I’d rather not damage it cosmetically.
  • 90/disc carbon brake surface for tri racing, but still gets used in TT training regularly

As mentioned, the HEDs are a great wheelset (I have 60/60 on my roadie). Get some premium brake pads (ex. Kool Stop Salmons) and the braking is 2nd to none.

FWIW, I have a very low miles 60/90 wheelset, Jet Black that I am looking to part ways with. Was last set of wheels in my stable. To me it is the only rim brake wheelset to ride. I also have a Jet Black disc.

Agree with others. The braking is incredible. About halfway between regular rim and 160mm rotors

Xavier, save some cash and get them from Thomas. I have the 60/90 set but paid 1200 for them new. Don’t pay 1700. Hopefully prices will go down, but if not, buy used!

Thosms, what are your prices for the disc?

the $1700 figure does sound a bit steep, but buying a chain these days can be a challenge.

I would definitely look into Thomas’ wheelset. You can find the regular Jets used, but Black wheels are rarely avaiable. I have two sets and I am still waiting for another set of 60s to pop up, but nothing on Ebay or the Classifieds for quite some time.

For anyone looking for these kind of wheels, we have sets of Jet Black 40’s on sale for under a grand, and I believe we have one 60 and one 90 left too. Brand new and a great price. But need to know what you need(rim or disc brakes). And at the moment I dont recall which we have in stock, but will check if anyone is interested…

I had a set of Superteam wheels for training and they were the biggest POS wheels I have ever ridden hands down. I have Hed Stinger, GT3, Jet, Jet Black and H3+ and predominately only ride Hed wheels I think they are that good. If you can afford it then do it…

Also interested in price for the disc? Thanks.

Andrew

Honestly curious to what you thought was wrong with the Superteams, as well when you got them?

I have them and they are as good as the 88/disc that came with my Premier Tactical bike - I got mine last year.

Wow, what was bad about the Superteams? I’m only a couple years into triathlons so this is the only wheelset I’ve had and they seem just fine to me…which is why I’m not sure if I should upgrade. It sounds like superior braking is the only benefit.

I’m hesitant to get a disc wheel due to being a smaller woman, which is why I’m leaning toward the 60/90mm set.

A solid rear disc wheel is more stable than a spoked rear wheel.

The flex in them was terrible that if you are lighter may not notice but the build quality. The bearings in the hubs were sloppy and when I messaged them they told me to remove the bearings and score the housings with a retractable knife then replace to take the slop out of the bearings. They are as cheap as you can get…
