I have a 2009 Spesh Roubaix Pro with DA 7900. The shifting is feeling a bit squishy like the shifter internals are getting worn. Has anybody upgraded to DA 9000 from 7900 and have any opinion on difference? Is it worth the upgrade? This frame is not designed for internal routing so not considering Di2.

Can’t say I noticed much in the feel.

Have you tried getting new inner and outer cables installed? That usually means much more for shifting quality then whichever shifters you are using.
I’d say it’d be worth it just to get on the 11 speed bandwagon.
The new 9000 (and Ultegra and 105) front shifting is phenomenal.
If you want to save a few, and by a few I mean a lot, of money just put 6800 Ultegra on it. Dura-Ace is great, but not twice as great.
.
The improvement is significant in FD shifting and braking, but I agree with others that Ultegra is the best value. I would swing by your bike shop and ask to test ride a bike with 11 speed to see what you think. This will tell you more than anything else.
I would upgrade. DA9000 is spectacular. You could consider Ultegra 6800 which is quite cheaper and the shifting is still very good. They increased the leverage in the front derailleur, so it’s much easier to shift. It comes down to aesthetics, weight, and of course how much you want to spend.
We had a customer riding 7900 and went to 6800 on his new bike. The performance was a night and day difference and he said he had no regrets about not choosing 9000. He put the money difference towards nicer wheels.
I am riding a 2015 s5 with ultegra 11 speed and have no regrets not being on dura ace.
I upgraded to 9000 from 6700 on two different bikes – road bikes – and the difference was huge. Shifting is much easier, more enjoyable and more reliable The extra cassette cog helps me achieve some gear combinations I wanted with smaller jumps which is nice
I highly recommend it. I think you’ll be just as happy with 6800 as with 9000.
DA7900 is nice stuff; DA9000 is phenomenal. Keep in mind that you’d need new wheels as well, so an upgrade could get pricey, even to Ultegra 6800. The value of it is completely dependent on what you value and your budget. If you don’t “have” to spend the money on this or would rather spend it on something else, then just have a new cables/housing installed on what you have.
That said, I’m a SRAM guy and chose to go from Red 10 to a mix of Force & Rival 22 recently. It’s just as good, if not better, than the Red 10 in terms of how well it runs. I got a phenomenal deal on the stuff, but if I didn’t already have wheels that were 11 speed compatible I wouldn’t have found real value in it. The extra gear is nice, but absolutely not a necessity or really isn’t even all that noticeable for the majority of my riding.

Any commentary on the 9000 brakes?
I’ve got a lightly used gruppo minus brake calipers if you’re looking.

I agree with everything you said. I am a Sram guy as well and think the new force 11 speed can stand with any group out there today, Red is just lighter with the same performance. Now with that being said i was debating using DA 9000 for my road racing setup this season and had a chance to ride 9000 for a week. It is better than 7900 by a quantifiable amount. The front shifts are easier and rear shifts require even less effort, shifting under power is also very good, better than 7900. But, in my opinion it is still behind Sram’s 11 speed group (force or red) for top mechanical shifting, electronic is obviously the king.
Just know that DA 9000 has had some serious problems which shimano has not really owned up too as far as recalls. Their 9000 Cassette has hundreds of documented cases online and witnessed in person the cassette literally cracking apart. Their first run of shifters where sheering the cables, now 9001 for the new corrected shifter version. Some people have documented issues with reliability of their RD, though that might be a bit dubious as i have not been able to substantiate that claim. Their new 11 speed chains for the first time have dipped below Sram in quality and shift performance in my opinion as well. I used to always use Sram with Shimano chains and cassettes, now its all Sram.
Hey Carl…just saw this. I might be interesting in shifters and der’s. I have S Works carbon crank so don’t really need that. Are you shifters the 9000 or newer 9001 ?
