Looking to upgrade my Vision Tri max crankset I currently have installed on my Felt IA 10. I’m looking for crankset recommendations in the $200-300 range. I have Garmin Vector pedals so I don’t need anything with power installed. I’m contemplating a Ultegra R8000 since I have Ultegra 6800 front and rear mech, but I’m not married to Shimano. I’m looking for 165mm crank arms too. Any recommendations are welcome.
Ultegra R8000 is a great idea.
Can’t go wrong with ultegra.
Remember that to install it in your bb30 shell in the IA, you’ll need a conversion bottom bracket. I use one of the wheels mfg versions. Budget at least 75 for that.
Oh, that’s assuming your IA is bb30. Not sure if the new IAs have changed…
I put a used SRAM Red 22 on my IA16. It was nearly new for $190. I love the SRAM cranksets. I have them on both of my bikes. (I have Ultegra R8050 Di2 on my IA16.)
I’m curious; what is it you hope to gain by changing cranks? What do you expect to get for you $200-300?

My current crank was a take off from a previous felt B12 that I was involved in a crash with. The large chain ring was bent and the local bike shop that switched the components over did the best to set it back to normal. Unfortunately, as with most things that are broke it has never been as good as before so I figured it was time to replace it. I don’t need anything exhorberently expensive so that really puts carbon cranks out of the running and I was just looking to see if anyone has any recommendations for a crankset up to this price.
I think anything aluminium is a good option especially Ultegra. I personally don’t like carbon cranks as it is only minor but they offer some flex compared to aluminium so I prefer the sensation of riding aluminium.
If you want cheapest option that allows you to keep BB same, FSA’s Gossamer comes in 165s for about $170. I don’t love the shifting of FSA ring, but they work fine. For $200 + new BB, you can have Ultegra, and with $300 to kill, there is literally no reason to purchase anything that isn’t an Ultegra. To get lighter via any other brand, you’ll have less $ left over and worse shifting. For that matter, 105 is just about as good. Not sure about the rings, but I can’t see why the arms/spider/axle would be any less good. Maybe cheaper and maybe heavier, and still fine.
But Ultegra is the no-brainer for $300, although you can have a workable replacement for $170. Gossamer is fine, 105 and Ultegra are incrementally better for shifting alone.
Fabian Cancellara won the world time trial championship on gossamer cranks. And they are very cheap and absurdly heavy.
High dollar cranks are not a great investment. Get whatever match your drive train.
I have a dura ace di2 road road bike that I had to replace the crank on which is a long story I won’t bore you with. Emonda P1, awesome bike, expensive bike. Put 105 crank on there. $128. Mostly just to pretend I am Spartacus, but still.
I would match your drivetrain. I believe Ultegra 6800 is 10 speed. Ultegra R8000 is 11 speed.
I would keep 10 speed with 10 speed and if you want the R8000 crank, upgrade shifters and derailleur to R8000 11 speed as well. Otherwise, grab a 10 speed version crank. If you stay with Ultegra, just get the 6800 crank.

I agree to some degree. When dating my girlfriend, I was flying to see her and doing long rides on her bike. It was too big for her, but happened to be my size. I was doing 80 mile rides on that old steel bike with Shimano 600 on it. That was a good group in its day, but old stuff for sure. The bike ride fine. Lol
A lot of what we get is more of a want than a need.
Interestingly, Shimano also says 105 R7000 is available in 160mm. Not that you need that, but that’s insanely cool. Ultegra and DA only come down to 165.
FWIW, I have Gossamer cranks on my cross bike, but with Praxis rings, and I’ve had one with a power meter on my tri-bike. I couldn’t care less about the weight, and agree that the same crankset won pro races, so good enough for me. Again, I prefer my Ultegra on my road bike AND $ talks.

Ultegra 6800 is 11 speed.

I also have an IA10 - after a couple months of riding with the stock crankset I replaced it with an Ultegra compact - partly for smaller gear ratios, but mostly to move down to 165mm crank length. Very happy with the change.
There’s obviously gains to had from a crank that is lighter guaranteed! Now are they going to be huge gains, unlikely but it bring the benefits of you being able to to utilize the correct arms length that you want for your setup even be able to change and upgrade the BB based on said decision so there’s actual benefits to be had.
However everyone here talking about like they took their child’s bike crank and just slapped it on their frame since there’s no benefits to having a nicer crank!
Prolly all of them got a DA or Sram red ha ha ha
