Upgrade my rear disc or don’t waste my money

In my quest to make my P5 as slippery as Dan Bighams P5 I’m down to the rear disc and a set of super extensions.

I’ll buy the extensions as soon as I get my position fully dialed but likely going with a set of Vision TFE pros.

The disc, I am currently running an older Jet disc. 23mm brake track version. I am running 23-25mm tires, VFR’s or Power TT’s. I think their are only 4 discs at this point I would consider.

Roval 321 $$$$
Revolver Asymmetric $$$$
Aerocoach aeox $$$
Hed Jet Plus $$

I would consider a Chinese disc from a reputable brand but it’s not at the top of my list.

probably not worth it for maybe a watt and at most a 2w gain.

I’m a bit of an aero nerd and I wouldn’t trade that disc in for one of the others if I was running it. Fast tire + latex and you’re fine

What he said! ^^^

Dan Brigham probably still rides a P5 because there isn’t really anything out there that would be faster. George Simpson, who was 3rd at USPro TT and regularly rips sub 46 minute 40k, also “upgraded” to a 2012 P5 this year as well. Similarly the HED disc is a super fast wheel and it will be really hard to do much better and they actually could be a bit worse because of rider and frame interactions.

There is probably way more bang for your buck in a wind tunnel or track session or a skin suit and helmet combo that works with your position. Heck you can do both for the price of the Roval 321

Does running a wider rim wheel improve rolling resistance any?

Since you’re running an older disc, does that mean it’s only 10spd?

If it’s an 11 spd I really like my hed jet black disc that’s 11 spd. Can you find one used and sell your current one? That would be a wider rear and may ride better.

Otherwise, keep what you got, as others have said.

I’ve seen a Light Bicycle disc in the wild and it is nice.

Not sure how this fits into your budget but Dan Bingham has been using Caden wheels for a while now. The disc is a one of a kind design by Ben the owner, spoked for more comfortable ride and a super light genuine 970g. It’s slightly lenticular and matches perfectly with a 25mm tyre. Not super expensive and certainly worth a consideration.

Dan Bingham’s the Performance Engineer for Ineos these days. Safe bet is a Princeton CarbonWorks Blur 633 is a fast wheel, although it looks like they might have a new disc in the works.

Not according to another poster here and myself: I cancelled my LB disc order after the first one (unpainted) and second one (sunflower weave) looked terrible and slightly-less-terrible in the QC photos they sent over. My LB Falcon Pro AR55 wheels have been great but not sure I trust their QC on the disc at this point… to each their own
