I’ve probably been as a big a nervous nellie as anyone, but we’re getting silly.
Weather good, we have a good race
Weather bad, we have fun and tell stories over beer

I am always amazed at the people who are adorning IM gear and then complain about how it was too windy, cold, “we had to run 1/4 mile to transition”, mismeasured by a mile in an IM, etc. If you have done an IM then you should be used to all types of weather and deal with the unpredictable, then again maybe that is why IMSG doesn’t sell out.
People need to stop bitching and get ready to race whatever course or distances the RD’s put out there.
Bob
Agreed!! Personally I want the swim to happen but I feel the RD’s for this race are in a lose lose situation. a) swim cancelled=people complain cause its not that bad. b) swim on=people complain cause to rough
People are going to complain that the bike portion is to hilly. I have news for you people. ITS CALLED MOUNTAINS!! And to tell you the truth this is going to be calm considering the climbs the elevation they could have routed the course through.
They have done a lot of work to get the roads to where they are patched and paved and when one road didnt work out they switched the route so I respect the RD and am pleased with the way they handle all the complainers and did the best they could to put on the best race possible.
If this wasn’t the inaugural year none of this crap would be happening

It doesn’t have to be an IM. Just look at the registration for Branson 70.3 2010 vs 2011. Word got out that the bike course had some hills, and everyone took a pass.
And you can add in Syracuse. Way down this year. I bet they are down again after a new run through the hills. The new run course is awesome, very challenging btw.

Or was it way down because people didn’t like the course from the prior year and they only did it the 1’st year because it was an Mdot branded race. There were a lot of great races around the same time, which may have also drawn people away.
One of the differences I have noticed between cyclists/triathletes versus straight runners (especially ultra runners) is a very wound up, to-the-second performance driven mentality in the former. Ultra runners (being one myself and knowing quite a few) are much more relaxed. If the course is crazy hilly, all the better: it’s supposed to be hard. And like the first poster said, if the weather sucks you do your race and get the added benefit of the crazy war story.
While I enjoy triathlons as much as anyone, it’s weird how picky and time-crazed most triathletes are: every course and every race day has to be perfect and every component on your bike has to be the lightest possible; and every single element of transition has to be at the utmost efficiency to spare those precious seconds it takes to tie shoes or put on arm warmers. I get it when it comes to elite athletes, but the AG field needs to lighten up just a bit.
All that said, I am looking forward to a having a blast in the Poconos this Sunday, which will be my first Ironman branded triathlon. It’s such a beautiful area. I will be just as bummed if the swim gets cancelled as the next person, but I don’t think it will; forecast isn’t even calling for all that much rain between now and then.

I’m sure there are a LOT of differences between ultra runners and just about anybody in any sport.
Yes, it’s called lack of normally acceptable social skills.

I am looking forward to the race in a never gone through hills like this before way and will I be able to run a mile much less 13.1 after the bike. Kind of in a sadistic sort of way I guess. Any way hope it will be a fun and safe race for everyone involved from racer, volunteers to the RD’s and that everyone enjoys it. AND DAMN IF THEY HAVE THE SWIM IT WILL BE FUN AS A ROLLERCOASTER !!!
