Apologies in advance if this has been covered, I did a forum search and found nothing (pasted “Universal Monoextension” in).
Basically, just got the universal monoextension via my trek shop, got some neat extensions, and put it all together…was very excited. Turns out the clamp of the system is about 1cm wide and the extension is able to wiggle quite a bit. This probably is not an issue (could be over time), but it bugs the stuff out of me and is a bit unsettling. One wants to really torque on the bars sometimes and these sort of remove your faith in the system holding togeter. I am thinking about packing tape wrapped, etc., but before embarking on a hack wanted to know if anyone on this forum had solved this issue - would love to get some advice.
(see post 27 - the following video in retrospect is not really absolutely fair in the current context. I have left the video link up for completeness but want to add that I later found my Trek unit to be 22.2mm exactly and my extensions to be too small… Mr. Kuba’s video’s are quite informative because he is pushing the limit of TT aero so I like them and they are informative, but in this case his opinion did not reflect the correct state of affairs for my bike’s part in hand…so your mileage may vary…just wanted to give air warning - see post 27 as noted for the data)
Note, some comments are in this video around 2-5m (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NZeRiUi5BY ).
Same problem here. Have friends who also had this problem.
I may try to make a shim out of thin aluminum like a soda can. Idea came from teddygram to be fair.
I have tririgs, the top of the line Gamma ones in carbon and they are quite nice. They too are tough to get into the things. The issue is if I use the appropriate torque on the bolts, that is tight but the whole thing levels up and down. If a tube is 22.2mm, this will happen to any extension afaik because the clamp is at 22.2 and the open time is just a tiny bit wider.
Are you saying that there is absolutely no wiggle in your system - if so, that is unique to your bar. Could you take a micrometer to your extension and report back. Mine are 22.2. Spot on. Had issue with aluminum poles too. Called wattshop and d2z…they also had same issue reports. I don’t understand unless 51 speedshps are over 22.2mm …?
On Zwift on a 3 to 5 percent I might want to stay on the extensions to sort of do strength training intervals - well, I can literally feel the extension sort of “give”… I am keeping my bolts to standard, shop recommended and Trek recommended values.
Drives me nuts as I had a normal monobar and that was rock solid…(got spoiled).
Yes, had them installed at the trek dealer, professional everything. Again, have contacted several other extension vendors and they have had the exact same issue with this thing…have not cut any corners…
PS: The mechanic I use is guru. Am a wrench too…753 certified back in the day…
There are several mates with Zipp Evo 110s, both aluminium and carbon, on SCs near me and none had a problem with the extensions. Rock-solid all around.
I’m using Zipp evo 70 aluminum with no issue. Is this the updated (cheaper) mono plug-in that some are having isssues with? Also, pose this question to Mitch on the ‘Official Speed Concept Owner’s’ thread. He’s the trek rep on here.

Mine is less than a yr old and purchased new. It sounds like there are some issues with consistency. Now I have not tried Carson extensions because I worried about how much torque I had to use with the Evo 110. But if there a snugger fit then maybe the way to go.
Mine wiggled, so retried with carbon paste. That was better, but still some movement.
I then pulled them out and wrapped the area that would be clamped with some of that very thin tape used to get a better seal on plumbing joints; plus carbon paste. Now feel rock solid, but not yet ridden on rough roads…

Can your LBS get you a new monoextension via warranty?
Mine is waiting for me at my LBS and I plan to use the same zipp extensions as you.

I haven’t brought it to their attention yet to be honest probably because several of my friends had the same issue I kind of just chalked it up to everyone was having that issue. But that is a good idea.
It sounds like some people out there are having no problems at all
I am in the process of rebuilding the front end of my Speed Concept and going from a mono extension to a mono plug with 51 speedshop extensions (looks like the same variation Steve rides). I watched the video and then dry fit the extensions (no carbon paste) into the mono plug. I didn’t torque it to spec, only 6 nM, and even then I didn’t get any of the rotation that Ronald shows in the Youtube video linked above. I’ll dig up my micrometer later and see what the OD is on those extensions.
Could you tell me which Mono Plug-In you are using. Did you update to the 6mm hardware model or are you using the 5mm hardware model? Also from what year?
Some extensions fit better than others which is why I would suggest to dry-fit before if you have the ability to. HED extensions do run small that I am aware of, so avoid those. While shimming can work, it’s certainly nice to be able to run just the extension without applying tape.
Profile Designs and Zipp are two brands we know to fit better than others for our Plug-In (and other manufacturer plug-ins in general). It may be worth considering a change to have one fit snug.
