United Healthcare CEO killed

The gunman apparently knew which door Mr. Thompson was going to enter, according to two people familiar with the investigation, and shot him several times from a few feet away. Mr. Thompson had recently received several threats, according to one of the people, and the police were investigating the source and exact nature of those threats.

I’ll be honest- I’m surprised this has not happened sooner.

Say you have a tumor and can’t get reasonable care. You don’t have a lot to lose. The guy that personally made 10m running a company that profited 8.9 Billion in the first three quarters of the year would definitely be a potential target for your angst.

For some folks all those things you mentioned just lead to the Presidency of the United States.

Don’t you have to pay for those with an app to unlock them? That would give the police the shooter’s details, wouldn’t it? Not a smart move, if true

Or can they just be wrestled out of the bike rack?

Video released

Shooter doesn’t seem the least bit nervous or hurried. Not the picture of a disgruntled customer or employee to my eyes, but what do I know.

Terrible to say, because I truly don’t wish death upon many people, but I feel no sadness for this guy. I feel bad for his family. I know all the crap about his responsibility to shareholders but the company this guy runs has screwed around with people’s lives for years (with no remorse). Increasing out of pocket expenses for patients but less and less covered care (or flat out denials). How many patient deaths are on their back because they either denied or delayed care (the appeals process can be onerous)??? They also caused quite a bit of pain, among patients and medical practices, with their Change Healthcare fiasco (very damaging financially for many). They don’t give a $hit about any of us (patients, physicians, etc…).

You need an app, but…

Watching the video it looks like the shoot was very professional. I’m guessing that the use of the e-CITI bike was intentional, meaning that he probably had someone else’s credentials. It would not take much to use that data to throw the police off.

If you get your phone stolen you report the phone and inform the bank, but who thinks about your CITI bike account? It uses NFC so the phone can be dead from the carrier’s view point and still work at the kiosk.

Edit to add the gunman is using a suppressed weapon. That is very unusual in most shootings.

What’s going on with that gun? How come he has to keep cocking it? In the article I read at lunch, police didn’t confirm a suppresser but if not, it looks awfully long. Like home made.

speculation is subsonic rounds, which don’t have enough recoil energy to cycle the weapon

Are we sure that video is correct? In articles I see big flowerpots I don’t see in the video.

I work (am woirking right now) less than one short block from the site. Had I not seen the news I would never have known it had happened. Not a lot to add save that:

  • there’s footage of him at a starbucks earlier (with a mask and hood) - did he pay cash?

  • you can’t wrestle an ebike out of the stands. You need to (a) unlock it with the app (though there may be some gameifying around false or borrowed credentials that I’ve never had to explore) or (b) steal an in-use bike. This happens a lot and is a huge fine for the victim which truly sucks. It’ll be interesting to see if a very early morning commuter was mugged by this guy in the half hour before the shooting.

Comments that they were subsonic rounds which was why he cycled the gun manually. Explains the unfired rounds.

Yes

I’m going to go complete 48 hours and Dateline on ID on this and the wife was behind it.

Police now saying it wasn’t a share-bike, but just an individual ebike. That makes a lot more sense as an escape plan.

The gunman did seem to know where he would be and when.

Almost had to involve someone who knew him well.

Also suppressed, I think it was 22 which also suppressed is usually Not good to cycle the pistol.
This was not a pro hit first shot was in the calf, with no security the target was wide open the shooter could have walked right up to him single shot to the head.

From CNN:

" Police recovered three live 9mm rounds and three discharged [9mm shell casings from the scene. The words ā€œdeny,ā€ ā€œdefendā€ and ā€œdeposeā€ were found on the casings, ABC News reported, citing police sources."

Seems like a lot of people had a beef with the company, but this would certainly help narrow it down. At first when I saw the video I thought it might be a pro given how calm they were. Now I think it’s a personal hit by someone who was very motivated, and they practiced.

When I heard that this morning it certainly made me think somebody who feels wronged by the company.

ā€œA .22 will rattle around in your head like PAC-Man until you dieā€
