Unbound 200 mile on beach cruisers

This was such a good article! If you don’t follow Steve the Intern, founder of Rodeo Labs, on Instagram, highly recommend doing so: https://www.instagram.com/stevetheintern/?hl=en

I think he’s done every major gravel race so far this year, including 338mi at the Traka in Spain and headed to Italy next, and still has time to touch base 1:1 regularly - good human.

Iain ended his interview asking Stephen if he could wave a wand, in so many words, and change Unbound, what would he do to preserve the culture. I wrote about this topic of culture shifts with the professionalization of sport for ultra running a bit ago: https://fastcapitalism.uta.edu/...vid_lehecka10_1.html

and here’s how I’d answer the question:

Have buses with bike racks that load up finishers and take them to the back of the race with the rule that no matter how fast you finish, you have to go back and finish with the last people, so everyone ends up finishing together no matter how fast you went at the beginning of the race. There is still a prize for finishing first, But you have to go back to the back of the pack.

A triathlon like that? It would be one hell of a party at the end and for those that finish fast, they would be struggling nearly just as much as the last fishers due to being forced to be out there after putting in a hard effort.

I love Iain and his tangents. Looking foward to reading this one tonight.

I love that idea too Nick. As someone who jumps in my car ASAP after a race I think this sport in particular would do well to encourage the pointy end folks to stick around for the last finishers.
