I’m about to purchase pedals for my new tri bike. Is the main difference between the 105 and Ultegra pedals just weight? Can 25 grams of savings really make a difference?
Thanks for your input.

I have Ultegras. Get the 105s.You won’t notice a difference and you’ll save some coin.
no. get 105.
Get 105 everything, chain cassette etc. You won’t notice the difference and you will have money saved left over to keep the wife happy.
I have 105 carbons on both my bikes. Awesome pedals.
Another vote for 105’s. I have DA on my race bike just because everything else on there is DA - is a vanity thing you understand. Change out the pedals for 105’s and you notice absolutely no difference whatsoever! I think the 105’s are more robust in a crash as well.
I had 105 pedals and they were great. Spend money on things you’ll notice a difference on. Shorts are a good example.
Agree with all of the above. I had Ultegra on my TT bike and 105 on the road bike, both SPD-SL (before I switched to Speedplay) and wouldn’t have known the difference. 25g is nothing on a tri bike, I’ve done snot rockets weigh as much as that. Oh, and you can get 105 pedals in white to match your frame. If your frame is white…
Another vote for the 105. I was asking myself the same thing last year and couldn’t really find enough reason to opt for the Ultegra. Save the $$… you will have plenty of other toys and stuff that you’ll want to save up for.
Get Ultegra. No particular reason but everyone else said 105.
I have some Shimano R549 SPD-SL (the level bellow 105) I bought new and used Ultegra pedals (bought from the classifieds) that were almost the same price. There is a noticeable difference between the two in terms of weight off the bike but I would be hard pressed to tell the difference while riding. My guess is the difference is smaller between 105 and Ultegra.
As an owner of both DA and 105, get the 105. In silver. The black coating flakes off.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I was hoping the consensus would be that 25 grams makes a difference with pedals. Oh well. Looks like I should save some money and buy the 105’s.
Thanks again for your suggestions.
Had all three levels of the pedal. I don’t see any diff between 105 & Ult.
I recently just got a Stages PM so I switched out the left crank arm so I can have power on the road bike that I have on the trainer. I have Ultegra pedal on the left and 105 pedal on the right, and I don’t notice any bit of difference between the two.
Just went through that same thought process. I had crashed and bent/broke one of my stock 105’s years ago, on a whim bought Nashbar’s carbon (cromoly spindle) and really liked them. Ended up giving them to my wife and bought Ultegras. I couldn’t tell the difference between any of them. My current Ultegras are warn-out, corroded, and I am going to be a frugal ass and get the Nashbar carbons again. Lightest (225g/pr.) and cheapest (<$40). ST’s will likely have some things to say about this.
The only negative is the SP-D’s are easy to get replacement cleats and don’t match Nashbars geometry.
Everything 105 except the crankset and possibly front dereaileur.
I had 105 on my tri bike and Dura-Ace on my road bike and couldn’t tell the difference. (My bike fitter wanted me to use the 105 on my tri bike because they have a slightly wider Q-factor.)
You should get DA because the weight savings will allow you to pedal faster. Rotational weight makes a big difference. /pink
I’ve got 105’s and R540s. Can’t tell the difference.
I have both the Ultegras and the 105s. Mechanically you can’t tell the difference. Ultegras looked a little better and sleaker. Very minor difference. The 105s should do the trick for you.
Dura-Ace are slightly “better” I suppose as they have an extra set of bearings instead of a bushing. But the lower end aluminum pedals (Ultegra/105) are virtually identical.
