Just curious what the real difference is between the newer 105 and ultegra pedals. The weight difference is only a few grams, but the price difference is considerable. Is it the name, bearings, better spindle, better body, other?
If I am not mistaken - paint, or color there of. Adjustable tension. A steel plate and a seal.
I believe 105 = plastic bushings, ultegra = sealed bearings. Could be wrong though…
Wrong! The 105 and Ultegra share the EXACT same spindle and bearing part numbers according to Shimanos website. Quality on the ultegra is much nicer tho, Ultegra made in Japan, 105 made in malaysia. The difference between the two pedals are the body (ultegra has less material), body cover (shiny vs dull) and binding mechanism and all its parts are of different quality, also stated in their website "B: Parts are usable, but differ in materials, appearance, finish, size, etc. "
Copied from another site…not my words.
Thanks, Chip.
I have a pair of each on two bikes and I cannot tell the difference between them. I see no reason whatsoever to spend the extra on the Ultegras.
Agree, I have the Ultegra version and wish I had saved some money! Great pedals though.
I was actually going to pick up a pair of DA’s tomorrow…they carbon makes me drool…
Is it worth the money?
You guys who want pedals should go to blueskycycling.com and get the Dura Ace 7810 pedals for 159, or the Carbon Ultegra for 109. I bought a bunch to equip all my bikes - I think the sale ends soon too.

I have a set of 105 on one bike, and Ultegra on the other. I can’t tell a single bit of difference between the two. They are both a league of superiority above the old Look Keo. The stack height is lower, the pedal platform is wider, the finish is better where the cleat meets the pedal surface, the cleats are likely to wear much less from walking, the float mechanism is much better (it is what I’d described as a “pseodo fixed” in which I can dial in the angle of my foot and it more or less stays at the angle that I want my foot to stay at rather than doing the crazy speedplay float thing which you either like that or you don’t).
I appreciate that many of the items I mentioned have been improved in the KeoMax, but I believe the Shimano still have a wider platform AND you can get to wider Q factor (if you want that) because the slot in the cleat has more East West range. All of these improvements have been really good in helping me recover from nerve damage in my left foot. When I orginally restarted biking, with “bike shoes”, I could not control my left foot when on Keos (due to the nerve damage), but on the Shimano’s I could. Amazing how little things all add up to make a big difference.
I’d only buy the 105 but was intrigued to see if the Ultegra would feel any better. Well, don’t make the same mistake I did (even though I got the Ultegras fairly cheap at Probikekit…I’d just get 105 from Probikekit).

I gotta check that out.
Thanks, guys. That’s helpful.
Thanks for the link. I think I will pick up the Ultegras for $79. I do want the carbon but I don’t think the 50 grams is worth the $30. But I have been looking for pedals to replace my OLD 105s.
