I am not too sure why we don’t have more of those, it is the coolest way to do a TT ever. I have done one with a guy that I took maybe three 1 min pulls in a 40k and did a sub 56. And I have done one where I did the bulk of the work and pulled a 58. There is something about suffering with a buddy that adds to the spirit of the TT.
I only know that Djan Madruga was the RD of the first IM Brazil in 1998 and that he was an Olympian in Montreal in the pool. Not sure what the incident you are alluding to is.
You guys are right: During the first network telecasts of Ironman Djan Madruga was one of the fastest swimmers.
One year, the day *after *Ironman, Madruga rescued a drowning tourist from a rip tide in Hawaii.
And you are right, the Barrachi Trophy was a sensational, invitation only 2-up team time trial that paired cycling superstars together for a brutal two man team time trial. The last Barrachi Trophy was won by Sean Yates and Dag-Otto Lauritzen. I believe, in a bit of irony, that Bernard Hinault was once paired with Greg LeMond for the Barrachi.
Used as a verb, i.e., “We totally put the Barrachi on that guy…” it means have a dangerous or annoying rider on a group ride, and putting two strong riders on the front to rotate pulls over 28 mph until he/she either shuts up or goes out the back.
Two ups are great fun, aren’t they? Shame that they are few and far between on the TT calendar. Fortunately, I know my limits and would never be dumb enough to do one with Bryce. Perhaps you could arrange for SuperDave to ride out to the 10 with us or get Mike A to goad Bryce into taking alternate pulls on the front for us. That boy can never turn down a challenge and will keep going and only turns his head to chunder ( biking beast!), good entertainment value!
Frankie and Aderhold Barrachi’ed Mikey this morning. They went Dearborn-Northville-Dearborn in 1:25:00. Mikey was in here this afternoon saying, “Man, my legs hurt”
Boy, with that team even Mikey never stood a chance. I don’t suppose Frankie will be around on the weekend we are in town? If Mike O is in the shop today could you please ask if he could post a response to my e-mail from the weekend?
Many thanks and have a nice evening, Tom. Hope the lurgy is leaving you.
Djan was perhaps one of the first Brasalian pro triathletes. He was a wicked fast swimmer, who I believe made Olympic finals. He was around with a couple of guys named Rob Mackel and Paul Donahue. They were all superfast open water swimmers, and it was amazing to watch when these guys got together. It was always a run up the beach, and they would actually swim side by side and not draft, to really make it a drag race. Djan went on in the early 90’s to put on the first Ironman style events in Brazil. I stayed at his house when I did the race about 15 or so years ago, and he has a beautiful wife and family.I haven’t seen or heard from in years, but perhaps one of our Brasalian slowtwitchers could inform him about our little community here and he could update us on his latest and greatest…
