"twitchy" bike handling

My bike feels a bit Twitchy while riding on the hoods, but not so much on the aero bars. Would moving my weight forward or back help this situation?

Thanks

Do you have a lot of spacers and a short positive rise stem?

Is this a tri or a road bike? Tri bikes are normally more twitchy due to the geometry placing your weight more forward. Do you have a short stem? This would contribute to a twitchy feel. Do you know what the fork rake is. Larger rakes make a bike twitchier.

My bike is a Trek 2100 from '04. It does have what seems to be a lot of spacers on the stem (4 cm) but has a longer stem (11.5 cm center of post to center of bars). I have been told that the bike is on the smallish borderline for my frame size, but can be configured to ride right.

Should I remove some of the spacers to settle the bike down?

Some bikes have twitchier handling characteristics than others but I’m not familiar with the 2100.

It could be a fit issue. Here’s a good site to read about road bike fitting. Follow it and set the bike up this way and see if it helps. It talks about saddle fore/aft adjustment.

WHy your bike feels more twitcy on the hoods vs. Aero is beyond me. Thats typically backwards of how bikes respond. If it feels calmer in Aero then you can try lowering your stem a little (assuming that won’t compromise your comfort). This will “roll” your body forward slightly, bringing your CG up. Do you ever ride the bike in the drops? That would be a good way of telling if lowering the stem will work.
