I retired a few years ago and can swim pretty much when I want. The local masters squads swim 5 to 6AM MWF or 7 to 8PM, neither of which are times I like. If I swim mid day I can get a full lane, but at 68 I’m often the youngest (and fastest) there. I’ve gravitated to getting a free lane next to the local age group team which has sessions 4 to 5:30PM 5:30 to 7PM. It’s fun having a bunch of noisy kids swimming hard workouts next to me, even if I watch the 11 and 12 year olds go flying by.
honestly I kind of like it too.. they bring so much energy to the pool, it makes me feel better too..
I would love to have some swim kids, but alas it is just a bunch of old water walkers and occasional swimmer doing 100’s at 2 minutes..Today I had the entire pool to myself, big storm has stalled and still not hit with full force. But just the thought of it kept the regulars home I guess..4th day in a row, but felt ok so pushed a couple things.
Thinking about one last meet now 1st week of dec, the SCM champs which are fairly local. If I can just keep healthy and continue to do some good swims, why the hell not!!!

Got an unexpected swim in yesterday, was pouring rain but no lightening, so pool was open. I got an hour all to myself while lifeguards stood under a pop up tent, so just did a bunch of 100’s. Team I swim for put out a request for everyone to do the postal 3000 swim this month, guess they are going for the win. I have done absolutely nothing to train for one of those, so may do a few swims in that direction and then see if I can break 44 minutes. with that in mind, this happened:

Monty, is pull for you paddles and a buoy? Just deciphering here.
Yes when I put pull it is paddles and buoy. If I just use buoy I say just that, and if I just use paddles I just say paddle…I know when I see stuff on FB swimmer forums I inhabit, there are a lot of hieroglyphics I do not understand. I think what I use is typical, but maybe not…
Had a few swims on the weekend, nothing too much happening and today just wanted to flush the hour. Did 15 minutes very low key warming up. Then about 45 minutes mixing it up with aerobic free and 50 backstroke easy mixed in.

No kidding, I’m the exact opposite. I come up with something new everyday I swim, but I do tend to do the same warm up on a lot of days. Trying to break that up lately..Today was going to be an off day, but big storm coming in and looked like a tiny window at 1 today, so went ahead and took it. Tomorrow is supposed to be brutal, so probably making love to my treadmill..
Did a whole bunch on the legs today, half of the workout with zoomers and a ton of kicking. Meet is two weeks away, so cramming for the test so to speak:

That’s usually where I am. First 1000 or so is about the same, then try to mix it up. Problem I have is creating a sustained set, I tend to do 3 small sets instead of one big set with an overall focus. I haven’t posted a swim in forever because I’m not remotely where I want to be but yesterday AM was:
1200 warm-up, combos of D/K/S all strokes
8x100 @ 1:45, odd-FR (1:12/13/14/12) even 50BA/50FR (1:18/18/17/17)
8x75 @ 1:30, odd-any IM combo form focus, even-FR (52/52/50/49)
Cool down 50s
Really enjoy reading what you guys are doing each day and seeing the back and forth. I have had heart issues the past 18 months where I am getting very little oxygen so I have been taking a step back and working all parts of form and swim rhythm until we can figure out my heart issues. I typically swim three times per week doing a 500 SCM free warmup and 200 kick and then do form build sets of 4 x(10 x 50s) with plenty of rest to catch my breath and keep my form. The last set is putting it all together. Typically this gives me 2200 to 2700 SCM depending on what else I throw in. This past week I had my third ablation and had my pacemaker settings adjusted to more align with an athlete’s demands. We are off to New Zealand for the month between thanksgiving and Christmas. Once back I am hopeful the heart stays in rhythm and all the form work pays off as I jump back into training for half Ironmans to go after that 70-74 AG:-)

Had to pay attention to the clock and probably missed more laps than T100 Dubai. Definitely a tough workout and not routine.
Old dog meet new tricks!! And switching it up often also leads to new PR’s(as in first time swims), gets just a bit more motivation not having to always compare to the usual..
Took yesterday off in the pool, but did over an hour run to keep my muscle memory alive. Thinking about the meet coming up, looks like a couple dozen really fast guys in the AG are showing up, so some good comp!

Was tired, sore, and unmotivated today, but encouraged that shitty swims are a lot faster than they used to be. I guess that is what finally getting in shape feels like..
My 2 lane pool is hot now, guess the aqua aerobic folks won out. 86 or so but at least he air has cooled down so it isn’t a double whammy..Another not so great feeling day, but times are still good so will run with this good crop of days in the pool;

when i start to get tired at the end i just do whatever i feel like (usually consistent with what i was doing before, but i cant remember if i do a 50 easy or a 50 with 5 extra secs rest). today i was starting to waver off at the end and change it to 150s but no decided i would stick to the plan
55 minutes or so as
2 rounds of 4x100 free 100 back
2 rounds of 2x200 free 100 back
200 easy
100 free 50 back, 2x1 fr 50 bk, 3x1 fr 50 bk, 4x1 fr 50 back, 5x1fr 50 back
100 easy
Because monty.

4x50 on 1:00 descend (49/47/45/42)

(I only swim about that much, and only about twice a week. I do have over 6,000miles on the bike in 2025)
