Ignoring the men’s side, I’m really happy to see the women AG’s get more slots allocated. If your in your 20s, 30s, or 40s, it is really hard to get slot for those women. Often times, someone places 3rd or 4th in their AG/top 5 overall, and they don’t get slot. Happy to see those women who have been on that cusp, get their opportunity.
I may be biased as I have an athlete who placed 4th in her AG and 9th overall. She’s finally getting her slot.
Agreed. I’ve always struggled with how they should handle the womens kona slots. Part of me says they should get the exact same number as the mens side, but then the mens AG would be even harder to get as there’s not enough slots to go around. The pier is just not big enough for all the different races that get slots around the world. Makes me think that only the continental championship races should get slots going forward.
Ditto
Can someone please post a photo of allocation?
Thanks
Some these age groups are giving out Kona slots like participation trophies.

This is a good thing. They trained thru a pandemic when many have given up, showed up and got it done. The opportunity was there for everyone at least in USA. Those who finished and got a a slot got it fair and square.
Lot to be said for being in the right place at the right time.
Even if the pitcher throws it right down the middle of the plate, you still gotta hit the ball!
We’re there more slots this race due to covid or bc it was the NA championship?

and in since we often lose perspective…
completing an ironman is really hard.
I believe there were more slots due to so many races being cancelled in Europe due to Covid. Don’t think we have ever seen 17 slots to an AG, typical Championship would be what 75 slots I believe and Tulsa had 150?
Slot allocation meaning how many per AG etc…the image
I know there was 150 slots

The answer is both.
IM also knows that Ex-US travel to Kona is highly questionable so even if the European races had been able to take place, participation would have been lower.
On the side note, I just came here to see how long it takes for the elitist comments to show up and it took only a few comments to draw a parallel to “participation trophies”. I am super glad it wasn’t until I had completed a 70.3 that I actually met this considerable portion of elitist triathletes and I spend a decent amount of time apologizing to newbies or potential future triathletes for you.
Not to mention training for one!
I jumped on waitlist slot last Friday, no Ironman block, my legs were sore from a hard run and I limped as I stood up after signing up haha! Took till Friday for my hamstrings to loosen up, and they almost ended my race. I was 14 th place 40-44 more than a hour off my 4th place in Maryland that I missed a slot on. But I got it today for the same Kona I would have gone to off that 2019 near miss!! So excited.
That’s awesome. Well deserved, congrats!

Thanks mkq, I was thinking the same thing. For example, in M5-54, there were 208 finishers; to get one of the 18 spots, you still had to finish in the top 9% (congrats Anthony Renda) and go 10:44. That’s not slow, that’s still pretty damn hard for any age. There were 4 more guys that went under 11 hours and they still aren’t guaranteed spots.
I know the exclusivity of being a Kona qualifier is a big part of some people’s self-worth, but its always interesting that so many of those people also feel the need to drag on others to maintain that self-worth.
