Well, I know this isn’t a quantitative test, but I raced Camp Pendleton this weekend and the splits came out this morning. I raced it last year and here are my bike splits (40K):
'04 1:08:32 21.76mph
'05 1:05:08 22.9mph
If my math is correct, the difference is 3 minutes 24 seconds.
Last year I raced the same frame (Felt S22) with Hed Stinger Front and Rear on Tufo S33s Front and Rear. (Glued - Contental)
This year, Hed Stinger Front and Renn Disk w/Vittoria Corsa CX Front and Rear. (Glued - Mastik)
Conditions were very similar except I think there may have been more wind this year. Temps very close. I don’t think my condition is 3 minutes better this year, but you never know. I was coming off Ironman CDA a few weeks before Camp Pendleton last year. This year I raced San Diego International and Xterra Richmond the two preceding weekends before CP. I also know that I haven’t put as much time on the bike this year due to not training for an Ironman.
What I do know is that I definitely like the Vittoria tires better. I feel faster on them and the time bears that out. The next comparison test will be LA Triathlon on Sept. 11.
Way too many uncontrolled variables here to really say anything. A disk is certainly going to be a lot faster than a stinger, particularly with crosswinds – 3 minutes over 40K is not completely out of the question.
Assuming your average power was exactly the same (pretty unlikely), you can still go a minute or two this way or that simply by pacing differently.
There are a lot of uncontrolled variables, but dang it sure is “funny” that with all these variables the Tufo’s never manage to come out the winner. Why is that? Hmmmmm… Rotten luck on Tufo’s part I guess.
Justin, we are starting to think alike. Must be because of your time on Long Island. I was just going to say the same thing. Every time someone tests these tires, no matter what, different wheels, different year, wind, not wind, the Tufo's are always the loser. The evidence, no matter how unscientific is really starting to pile up.

This is not evidence… Anyone who frequents this board for the past 4 months would never try to post quantative data “for” tufo’s… There has not be once credible test thus far… only a bunch of hogwash, I put “x” tires on “y” wheels and did a standing roll test… bullshit… non of it is even worthy.
I have not interest in proving myself, I’m just tired of the tufo bashing with no real scientific evidence which suggest tufo’s are slower, or was it the tape, or was it glue, or was it the way it was glued, or I didn’t put any glue on them all test… it’s all bull.
For the record… I’m racing zipp tires and I’m happy with them.

…
Duuuuuuuude…
Without power data, it’s just guessing. No way, no how, can you make equipment conclusions like that without power data, without riding alone, without adjusting for wind, temperature and humidity, etc.
3:24 is easily accounted for from those factors.
3:24 is, oh, about 30-40 watts. Tires might account for that much, but it’s unlikely tires alone.

Hed Stingers have 50mm rims, right? the only disk wheel that would give a 3 minute advantage over a set of 2 aero wheels probably has a motor inside.

That was seat-of-the-pants. When I actually ran the numbers just now, I get 1-2 minutes, depending on power, wind yaw etc.
I’m loving the debate. For what it’s worth, I really do like the way the Vittoria’s ride and that’s the big thing. I feel like I can tell a difference. The first time I rode the Stingers with the TUFO’s, I expected this crazy difference and I didn’t feel it, it was almost like I was slower. That could be attributed to riding Aero rims for the first time. But I could tell an immediate difference with the Vittorias, they felt fast like Michigan Pro Race Clinchers.
I’ll update the thread after LA and hopefully SOMA.
That is EXACTLY what I felt. Same wheels. Using Tufo Elite Jets. I was fired up to ride these light, fast, all-carbon, tubular wheels. And I was like “eh?! where’s the speed??”
The Vittoria’s give me the fast, racing feeling I always had with Veloflex clinchers…
Last year I rode Eagleman (Flat as a pancake) with a home-made disc and a Hed CX front both with Tufo tires and rode 2:43.
I just rode Muncie (allmost as flat) with a Renn 575 and a Hed CX front, both with Tufo tires and rode a 2:29. That Renn disk made me go 14 minutes faster!!!

this is exactly what I felt when I bought a pair of Zipp 303s with Tufos attached … and this was well before the current fracas over rolling resistance.
I didn’t try different tires on the same wheels. I got a pair of ritchey semi-aero aluminum rims laced to am classic hubs, 16f/24r with oval spokes, and put michelin pro races on them. they felt just as fast, frankly. and the 303s were maybe half a pound lighter and more aero. that was enough for me.
