Tubular Choice -- Zipp v. Vittoria CX

My Zipp 606s need shoes. Mainly for racing, but since I am known to be lazy, there will inevitably be times when I won’t swap my training wheels from my road bike onto the TT/tri bike. So I have to plan on having a tire durable enough for real road training rides now and then. I don’t get too many flats on clinchers – maybe once every 3 months. Our roads seem littered with glass sometimes, but it’s usually a nail or staple that gets me. And no tire survives that.

I think it’s actually the same tire, if not they are close enough that price would be my guide. I do like the all black Zipp.

I would go for the zipp at the moment. I just flatted my vittoria, dont know why but when I glued these on the vittorias had a very rubbery inside. now when you take this off you would not believe the mess it leaves on your rim. took me a loooooonnnngg time to clean off. The zipps seem good so far

Yeah, kinda the way I see it. I feel semi-ashamed for asking about essentially splitting hairs here.

I believe Zipp’s are made by Tufo. And we all know about Tufo’s.

Not sure you are being serious, but I have both Zipps and Tufos, and the difference is similar to that between Eva Longoria and my fat, sweatpants wearing neighbor. The Zipps are the nicest tubies I’ve ridden - nice latex tube, very thin sidewall for a supple ride. The Tufos are harsh, no fun, but last forever.

They were in the early 90’s but not since aerobars…

You don’t get out much.

The Zipps are not the same as Vittorias, there is improvement in the tread and shape optimized for aerodynamics. If you like pretty colours, match up some Vittorias, if you want a stealth more aero option, glue on the Zipps. Both help the same Thai economy.

I’ve still got a Zipp tire that I bought in 1998 on my disk that has a Tufo logo on it. So they were making them until at least the late 90’s.
I used it yesteday. Seven years years later it is still working. (But supposedly it is slowing me down by 5minutes over a 40k. )

I ordered the Zipps and am putting my faith in that Zipp wouldn’t paper over a junky Tufo…

aztec: what kind of tire did you order?
