How many race with tubeless vs clincher ?

I run tubeless on my MTB and gravel bike. Clincher tires with latex tubes for the road bike and tri bike. I personally think it would be a lot easier in a race if there is a bad puncture to quickly change a tube then mess with a tubeless mess. Clincher tires with latex tubes are as fast properly set up as tubeless, so no reason for me to switch, especially at the 23-25mm range of tires I currently run.

25 mm clinchers with latex tubes

I use GP5000 clincher tires with latex tubes, 25mm front and 23mm rear.

Any tire > 28 is tubeless for me.

I bet I get 50% less flats w tubeless. My road tubeless tires are usually bombproof, but then randomly they get small sidewall tears that require me to swap in a tube / throw away the tire. I go thru more tubeless tires in a season than tuber, randomly.

Tubular with sealant? Rarely flat, easy and quick to change (less than 2 mins) and can run flat. I overtook someone on the same tyres Conti Comp tubs riding at 30km/hr with a completely flat rear. Get a flat with a tubeless tyre and it’s a f**king mess.

Totally agree! Also fits the best aero profile for my wheels. Win, win.

I haven’t run tubes in any tire on any bike (road/TT/gravel/mtb/track… yes, track) for over 6 years. You couldn’t pay me to go back to tubes/clinchers

How many flats have you had in triathlon running tubeless?

Went tubeless on my TT bike a couple years ago. Same on my road bike last year. Will never go back to tubes.

Raced 70.3 WA last year on country roads, after storm littered crap all over. Never seen so many riders off to the side putting in new tubes. Cleaned up my TT bike next day, and found sealant all over my frame. Did its job.

Entire time I’ve been riding tubeless, had one impact that couldn’t seal. Last 2 miles of a TT race. Still had enough air to limp to finish.

Bye, bye, tubes…

How many flats have you had in triathlon running tubeless?

Don’t do triathlon anymore, but fwiw, I can count the number of flats I’ve had across all bikes over the last 6 years on one hand That incudes running the notoriously fragile Corsa Speed G on my TT bike for a couple hundred race miles per year

I’ve been tubeless on all bikes for four years. I have (knocks wood) never flatted any tubeless setup in a way that resulted in me needing to put a tube in. I have had several punctures (that I noticed) that self-sealed while i kept riding.

Tubeless is like chain waxing: once you see the light, you’re not going back.

That’s my point. Few flats means you’re going to rate tubeless. Like the very few people who rate Corsa Speeds cos they’ve never flatted. We all know Corsa Speeds aren’t suited to long course triathlon, even Vittoria say they’re not, but those lucky few will say different.

1- I am not saying to use the Corsa Speed Gs for long course Tris. 2- Yes, of course, someone who has had fantastic success with tubeless is going to prefer tubeless. That’s common sense. As for long course Tris, there’s a simple workaround-- don’t use the Corsa Speed Gs. Conti 5000 TLs are almost as fast and far more durable. They’re my go-to tire for training and road racing, even on hard-packed dirt. The fastest tires aren’t the fastest if you spend a few minutes fixing flats.

Ha ha yeah learned that lesson the hard way with Corsa Speeds. Switched to Conti Comp tubs which were great and now on the 5000s as am on clinchers at the moment. I’ve heard the Corsa Speed 2.0s are better, I may have been on the older ones? But not going back to them regardless.

I’m considering switching to tubeless. I understand many consider it the Holy Grail. But I don’t get flats (one pinch flat and one “small wire in the road” flat in the last 4 years), so I’m torn on the value. It would have helped in the two cases, but it took 3-5 minutes to change the tube and get back to riding.

I fully understand the “>28mm = TL”, as the pressure is generally very low. For my road, I can run 75-80 (I’m 165#) psi with TPU tubes and not worry.

What would be the advantage for me? (Serious question. I would swap if there’s a good reason).

At your weight, with quality tubeless tires 25mm or wider (actual width, not nominal width), you could run 55-60 psi, have more traction, more comfort, less rolling resistance, and even less risk of flats.

At 180#, with 25mm Conti 5000 TL, I run 65 front, 70 rear. With 28s, drop 5 psi. 32s, drop another 6-7 psi.
