Tubeless tire valve stem

Going to switch to tubeless. Have tubeless rims been running tubes in. Have a 60 and 90. Do I need to get full length tubeless valve stems or can I use a shorter tubeless stem and add an extender like I do on my tubes?

I’m not 100% sure because I’ve never physically done it, but I don’t see any reason regular valve extenders can’t be used in this application.

When you say 60 and 90 is that the rim depths or valve lengths you need?

You can use extenders. The sort you want are ones that have a thread on what will be the exposed part. That way you can put a valve nut on (and possibly a little shim to fit nicely on the curve) and get an air tight fit. You also want to be removing the valve core from the valve stem and putting that on the extender.

An important point is that there is quite a difference in rim cross section shapes. So not all tubeless valve stems will get a good air tight fit on all rims. The best place to start is with the valve stem the manufacturer supplies or recommends and then if that needs to be extended do that. Or search around a bit and find out what other people use with those particular rims. You want to avoid struggling with the wrong stems that don’t quite seal.

Why would you want to do this, its just one more join to fail? Tubeless valves are available in many lengths just add 10mm to you rim depth and your good to go.

If you can find threaded valve stems long enough to clear the rims, no reason not to use them. The key is, they must be threaded so you can use a lock nut to keep them in place. I’ve not found any threaded valve stems long enough for a 60 mm rim, much less a 90mm rim.

That said, there is no reason not to use extensions to get the length you need. Again, MUST be threaded. I’ve tried various manufacturers offerings, have gravitated back to Stan’s valve stems and extensions. They just work.

Thanks for the replies. If I can find stems long enough for the 60 &90mm wheels I will but just looking quickly online most didn’t look long enough so I figured I’d need extenders.

Excellent, thanks

It can be done if, as others have mentioned, the exterior threading works for the tightening nut, I have this set up on one set of wheels and wouldn’t do it again because the bottom of the extender narrows down where it locks into the valve seat of the inner valve body. This spot regularly plugs up with sealant:( It can be cleared with some wire, but is one more issue to deal with that you won’t have with a full length tubeless valve body.
