Tubeless tire sealant

I just got a Canyon Speedmax 7.0 with Reynolds AR 58 and 80 rims. I want to set them up tubeless and was wondering if anyone had a preference between Stan’s regular sealant vs. Stan’s Race sealant. Is the race sealant really better at stopping punctures or are they about the same? I plan on using GP 5000 TL 700X28 tires. Thanks.

I have used Continental, Stan’s and Giant sealants with no discernable difference, ie: they all worked great. I just start looking for a sale when I get low on the previous bottle. The only time’s (3 times in 4 years with ~50K kms) I have gotten flats is when there’s a proper chunk of rubber missing or flapping on the tire. I don’t care how many “sealing crystals” and if they’re small or “extra large” to take from the marketing on the bottle, nothing liquid would be sealing those.

Where I have seen a difference is on the rim tape vs this hard plastic rim insert that acts as rim tape on my Bontrager training wheels. It’s lasted almost 2 years and 25K kms and I haven’t had to top up the sealant yet. Had to change the rear tire a month ago cuz the rubber was worn down to the lining in a couple places but the front tire is still holding air as normal. Whereas with my other two sets of tubeless wheels that use rim tape it seems to be closer to every year and 5K-10K kms that they need a sealant top up. To be clear here it’s not a difference on what kind of punctures will get sealed but rather how quickly the sealant starts to dry up.

If you plan on injecting the sealant through the valve on your wheel, and you rarely switch tires (you leave your tires on the bike for more than 3 or 4 months), and you are riding “normal” roads with an average amount of debris, then I would go with the regular Stan’s sealant.

If you pour the sealant directly into the tire as you are mounting it, and you switch tires regularly (like for different riding conditions), and you want max protection in bad conditions, then I’d do the race sealant.

You’re saying you only need to re add sealant 1x / year?

Where do ya live and what kinda weather? I’m in Texas and need sealant every few months before the “swishing” seems to go away

Ottawa, Canada. 1x per year was unintentionally misleading means top up in April (when I can start riding outside) and ride until some point in November so 6-7months depending on the year. I’d guess it’s maybe more humid here than in TX so it doesn’t dry as quickly? My bikes are also indoors when I’m not riding them, maybe that also makes a difference?

I don’t recommend Stan’s Race Sealant unless you’re going to put it in right before an event and clean it out right afterwards. It gums up pretty quickly. Use regular Stan’s or Orange Sealant.
