Tubeless Sealant Recommendation

I was an early road and CX tubeless convert and have used Orange Seal since it came out.

Last fall I posted for advice when it virtually bonded the tire to the rim. After soaking the wheel in hot soapy water and a lot of sore fingers, I finally broke the seal. That made me wonder if there was something better.

  • a friend suggested Muc-Off, but puncture reviews are not optimum.
  • Slime supposedly came out with a new formula that works better, but…

What do you use and recommend and why?

Thanks.

I use Stan’s Sealant (not race) as it works well and it’s an approved sealant by virtually every manufacturer out there (not all of them are and some can possibly void warranties of wheels)
.

My normal go-to is Stan’s. The shop i go to has only had orange seal for a while, and that’s been working fine too.

When i was on Panaracer we started using there sealant and it seemed to work really well. It smelled nice (kind of like pistachio ice cream) and seemed to seal well. It’s biggest downside was that it froze at a relatively high temp. We had our team bikes on a hitch rack going to Old Man Winter in CO a few years ago and when we arrived our sealant was frozen solid in all our tires.

Stans and Orange Seal seem to handle cold temps better. Orange Seal even makes a special low temp formula.

I’ve also used the Bontrager TLR stuff and it was fine too. I never tried Muc Off, and also haven’t tried the dry stuff from Finish Line.

I use Stan’s as well. I also tried Orange Seal, and though it worked fine, I found it really hard to scrape off bike parts if my frame got sprayed during a puncture. Stan’s comes off easily.

Another +1 for Stans (I’ve used it on an mtb for a few years now without problem.

We don’t get as cold as parts of the USA though (a few degrees C below zero at coldest here where I am in the UK). So can’t tell you about that if you’re in the frozen North.

Check out the original sealant test done here on ST circa 2014. If that is tl/dr then just Orange Seal.

I switched to tubeless about 2010 when Hutchinson introduced their Fusion 2 and Invulnerable tires. They supported our team (Team Army) and we used Stan’s sealant. The early Stan’s used a bit of ammonia and we had corrosion issues. About that time we were contacted by the Orange Seal developer to test their product. Good product. Normal development issues. Since then they became the major one (along with Stan’s).

I tried Slime but one puncture on 2014 sprayed the bike with sealant and didn’t seal the puncture. About 3-4 years ago they came up with a new formula but it didn’t work well after a month or so and they did a reformulation, which was better, but didn’t seal larger (4-5mm) holes.

Some on the market have a following (Caffelatex and others), but I’ve been reluctant to try them and risk flats. I was hoping others would give advice and experience with them.

I’ve been using Orange Seal Endurance for a few years. Has always sealed and never had any problems remotely close to what you have mentioned. I usually buy the 32oz bottle…run it on three bikes (road, gravel and MTB).

More concentrated, cheaper, better, lasts longer, comes with application syringe, comes in multiple size containers, free shipping, seller has great other products as well such as tubeless valves, brake pads, etc, etc:

I’m resurrecting one of the many “best sealant” threads… I need the collective wisdom of the ST hive. What is the best sealant and why?

I just did my first tubeless tire R&R. I used Muc-Off, but I didn’t like their pouch because it was hard to tell how much juice I was injecting. I’m pretty sure my front wheel is light so I plan to add more.

So what is the best recommendation? I lean toward Silca, but I saw a few criticisms posted a while ago.

Hard to go wrong with standard orange seal. Supposedly silca fixed their sealant, so it might be worth a shot, but I’m skeptical. Definitely not muc off

Thanks. I have a general bias toward Silca because of experience with several other of their products. But the whole tubeless thing is brand new to me - I bought the bike with no research.

I know nothing about Orange Seal and Stans, and those two seem to be some of the more popular here.

I got Muc-Off sealant on a friend’s recommendation who had done a little research. I did not like their pouch fill method, so I plan to buy an injector to have better visibility of how much I am using.

Silca somewhat recently released a new version of their sealant that supposedly lasts longer and can be injected through a valve stem. I just recently used some with a fresh pair of GP5000’s but fortunately/unfortunately haven’t had a puncture to test the sealant.

I’m a fan of FinishLine Fiberlink Pro latex sealant. It doesnt separate in the storage container, doesnt dry out in tires, and seals small perforations/punctures on the tire tread. Sidewall probs are dicey for any sealant.

With larger punctures requiring a plug, the FL sealant interacts well with a DynaPlug to stop air loss.

Orange seal endurance is basically the same thing as standard stans is my understanding, and these are longer lasting but less good at sealing, so maybe more like 6 months for a top up. Orange seal standard needs to be topped up a little more often, 3-4 months, but seals better. Stans race seals really well, but dries up super quickly.

I tried the silca stuff when it came out. Sealed holes really well, but dried up in less than a month. Supposedly they fixed that, but i also feel like orange seal works well enough for me

Have to echo this! Orange Seal through and through. Just swapped out training tires to my conti GP5000’s and even after 7 months the sealant was relatively fresh (probably about an oz. of liquid remaining) and nice latex film on the tire wall. slivers of latex in the tire tread where there was an occasional puncture.

I set up my road tires with about 1.5oz and inject through the valve stem (without the core). Easy peasy!

I’ve tried a dozen different brands and I’m currently back to stans. Largely based on the fact it doesn’t turn into fluid on the inside of your tires. When you have 8 sets of wheels across multiple bikes, having to peel glued on sealant off your tires gets old quick.
