hey folks, roadie here. am looking to get a quality but less-expensive TT bike for use in stage races and TT’s. i can get shop deals on both of these bikes - does anyone have any input as to which would be a better ride, assuming roughly the same price? i already have a pair of deep-dish wheels that i would be using instead of the stock wheels so that is not a factor in the decision. i’ve read online reviews but i’m looking for more personal experiences.
If you need the TT bike to be UCI legal get the TM02. The UCI legal TT bikes from Felt are the DA, and B series. If UCI legality does not matter you could go either way.
I have an IA10 and love it but I don’t race TT’s just tri where UCI legality does not matter.
Another roadie… I have a TM01. It’s fast, stiff, occasionally a pain to work on, but I love it.
I’d say get whichever fits, but depending on what size you’re looking at the differences in the geometry are small so if you fit one you’ll likely fit the other. The saddle position adjustment on the Time Machine seatpost is really nice. The adjustable rear (horizontal) dropout makes adjusting wheel position easy. I think the Time Machine is a much prettier bike.
If you’ll be doing your own wrenching on the bike then pick whichever looks easiest to work on. The TM02 has a standard fork, where the front end of the IA16 is more integrated. The rear brake on the Time Machine is a pain to work on, but I suspect the same is true of the IA16. If you don’t mind working on either then pick the one that excites you most. For me, of those choices, that’d be the TM02.
Another roadie here. I haven’t ridden a Felt because they stopped making them in my size, but my TM02 is the only bike that I have ever ridden that made me say, “wow”. It is stiff and twitchy, so that took some getting used to. I swear the thing responds when I blink. It is rocket fast, and I am sure that I own the mechanic who put it together thanks for this, but the drivetrain is like silk. The shifting is absolutely flawless and the bike is silent.
Double digit IA’s (10, 14, 16) have a standard front brake - the single digit ones have the integrated brake. I got an IA16 about a month ago and it’s been a ton of fun (some people love the super deep tube look, others don’t - I’m in the former and think the raw carbon look is great).
Right, the front brake isn’t integrated on either bike… what I was referring to by “the front end of the IA16 is more integrated” was really the stem. The TM01 has a standard fork/steerer and will accommodate any standard stem. As far as I’m aware (and I could be wrong), that’s not true of the IA16.
I’m sorry but these two bikes aren’t even in the same stratosphere of one another.
Look at the front end, how they vary in cleanliness. This is TT bike 2.0 vs TT bike 3.0. I’m sure the TM02 is nice but the TM01 is the only bike from BMC that compares to the IA series bikes for performance. I’m not certain how it compares price wise but I’m almost certain it’s 2x the price as a IA16.
Isn’t UCI dropping bike restrictions that will allow the IA series to be legal?
No. They’ve dropped the 3:1 rule, but the 80mm max tube depth and fillet area rules still apply. The rule changes nothing for any tri bike that is currently not legal.
Speed Concept Gen 1 and P4, P3/P2 Gen 1 would become legal if they dropped 3:1 for seatposts (which they haven’t)

The only thing that makes the Slice illegal is the 9mm wide seatstays. The minimum 10mm rule hasn’t changed. Nothing else on that bike approaches the UCI limits apart from the 25mm wide seattube.
