Trying to drop a few pounds

I have decided to get real serious about trying to drop 10 lbs…I believe not drinking soda or bread may be the answer…The soda I can live without but bread may be a whole other monster…While going to dinner they are always placing bread at your table…I thought Pita bread may be the answer…but that is also bread…any suggestions?

What’s the problem with bread? I lost about 26 lbs over 6 months, mainly eating bagels for breakfast and lunch. That and riding a whole lot.

Well, you’ve probably identified a couple of mousetraps in your diet with the soda and bread…

But beyond that…best thing to do is to document your diet for a month or so. Document EVERYTHING…every last sneaky m&m and extra splash of soda from the Taco Bell serve-yourself soda fountain. You’ll have a MUCH better idea where your calories are coming from. Take that comprehensive log to a dietician and let them examine it to make suggestions. Or you can simply use a little bit of G(military for intelligence  and figure it out for yourself. You’ll probably be VERY surprised how many calories you actually take in and where they come from. Do yourself this favor. You’ll have a good handle on your eating habits for the rest of your life if you do.

Don’t take just my word for it, though…read Slowman’s account of his epic diet…he mentions documenting as well…

Eat 6 small meals instead of 3 large ones. Keeps the metabolism going. Don’t eat crap. Protein, complex carbs and veggies are what you need. Train lots. Muscle eats fat – weight lifting will help but that depends on your tri goals.

oh yea, say your prayers and eat your vitamins like all the good Hulkamaniacs.

UM

Cut out only the white (highly refined) bread. Eat dark whole wheat bread. Switch to whole wheat pasta. Cut out all the ‘empty’ calories, like soda. If you are training, cutting out carbs could be detrimental. Carbs are your main fuel source. Also, sounds like you go out to eat alot, that could be a big problem. Try to cook at home more. If you go out, order from the kids menu or split a plate with someone else. Just eat in moderation and sensibly (and obviously train hard) and the pounds will come off. No quick fix.

I’ve lost 22 lbs within the last 10 months and I am where I always wanted to be - or rather used to be some years ago. I ate whatever I felt like eating, just a lot LESS than before. It’s a matter of discipline not to eat until you are stuffed. I got used to a little feel of hunger. I am now down to 152 lbs (size 5.69 ft.), don’t feel hunger, but got used to eating less. Sports definitely helps and this is also where you should make up your mind about eating healthy food. BTW, in order not to feel hunger, I drank loads of water!

What’s wrong with rice and bread? It’s never really what you eat, but rather how much you eat! At least that is what I experienced!

PS I hope I got those conversions from metric measures to lbs/ ft right!

You mean G2? G doesn’t by itself mean much. Could be any of the shops. Sorry to be picky.

I was told by a physician to minimize breads made with sugar. When you can’t read the ingredient list, generally the better choices are hard crusted, course textured breads.

Easy way to lose weight,
Cut out meat, fast food, soda, and sweets.

Then train hard and drink lots of water.

Best way to lose weight, and that is foolproof? Eat less calories than you burn off, and if it’s around 500 cals per day less than you burn it will stay off. One small downside is that it needs willpower.

go to fitday.com and keep track of EVERYTHING you eat. if you’re like me, you’ll be amazed at the number of calories you take in. you’ve got to be honest and enter everything though. then you can identify what you need to change.

I have gone there before in the past and do that for friends of mine. I know how much I eat and exactly how much to take out, it’s the ability to stop eating that I don’t have right now!

jk_allen13 has it right on the money.

eat less do more is the only equation you need.

i would suggest you don’t even need to significantly alter what you eat…just the amount(s). that coupled with a notable increase in activity and you will hit the goal. once you start seeing the impact of the initial change in the balance, it becomes easier to then alter the diet. then its becuase you want to more than you need to.

long story but i hit 203 in late january and i’m back down to 175 on the way to 165 using that formula.

how bad do you want it?

“i would suggest you don’t even need to significantly alter what you eat…just the amount(s).”

Well, that MAY be the case. But I find that the folks I advise have their macronutrients somewhat out of whack, and aren’t eating enough of the right things to get a balance of vitamins and minerals in their diet. Anyone can lose weight by burning more calories than they take in, whether by cutting back eating, training more, or both. The problem comes in when their nutrition is STILL out of whack in the nutrients department…they end up feeling worse off and often compromise their weight loss trying to make up for whatever it is they are missing.

One kid I helped found out that he was routinely taking in 8000+ calories per week of cookies/twinkies/candybars. This was even during a period where he was consuming about 500 calories less per day than he was burning with ~2 hours/day of training. He was losing weight, but eating crap. When you are cutting weight I believe it is especially important to get the right mix of nutrients…and eating super refined sugars isn’t going to get you much beyond some insulin-spiking high glycemic carbohydrates. This guy ended one three week block with a serious potassium deficiency and a general feeling of malaise. We tweaked his diet and he snapped back quickly…

I just started having south beach diet frozen meals for lunch every day. 250-350 calories, and it tastes really good.

right there i’m saving about 500 calories a day over what I used to have for lunch.

I have whole grain english muffin for breakfast with a little butter.

I feel hungry all day and it’s a good feeling

I figure as long as I’m feeling hungry I 'm losing weight.

shammyg’s prior posts would indicate a higher level of athletic achievement and fitness when compared to the general public. that is why i did not mention nutritional value of food choices. i’m going on the assumption that shammyg has a higher than normal level of understanding about that.

but i know exactly how you feel. i won’t argue about good nutrition. there is absolutely no question it is vital. however, here’s what i have found.

when i started down this road…and talking with many people to whom i have offered words of encouragement…the hardest part of the war is the opening skirmish…getting that initial change going. its hard enough to get someone to start doing something. if you lead them to do something, and simultaneously begin yanking away the rest of their comfort zone, their favorite foods, you run the risk of too much too soon and they fall off the radar cuz its just too much. dosen’t matter if you or i could or can do it…the issue is they may not if its too much.

however, if they can at least begin doing something, and just eating less of their comfort zone foods they will see results. once they take posession of the process and begin to accept the fact they really do have some control, it is a hell of a lot easier to then begin changing the food groups and working on the nutrition. it is also then easier to begin doing even more and eating even less and making better food choices because the results are tangible.

the equation may always be altered along the way. but it is always a variation of “do more…eat less”.

I want to thank everybody for the input on my quest to drop a few pounds…Just to give some info on myself…I am a FedEx courier so I run around all day .I have cut out a lot of the empty cals. I have lost 25 lbs since Nov…but want another 10lbs for my race weight…I plan on putting alot of time on the bike for my A race (Vineman) and have been on a fairly serious eating program since Nov… 5 to 6 meals a day but I love popcorn and I usually eat after my dinner which is about 9pm…I get off work at 5:45 and out the door for a ride by 6:15 back by 8:20 so by the time i get to dinner its close 9 P.m. in bed by 10:15 or 10:30…then to the pool by 6 a.m. Very busy day for me …as i am running with the clock all day…THX Sam

2 things work for me - don’t snack at night and cut alcohol.

At my age (47) it seems like I have to go under 2000 cal per day to lose assuming I am working out a lot. Any more than that and I just seem to hold.

Latest research indicates it doesn’t matter when you get your calories (for the avg person). An athlete’s diet is quite a bit different. However, research indicated that people do eat after 8:00pm are 250% more likely to eat higher fat/higher calorie/higher sugar foods. Providing you eat “healthly”, it doesn’t matter when you eat your calories…but remember an athlete’s food clock is/should be different.

How about putting a food basket in the truck and snacking on that? After each stop, take 2 gulps of water. Put a “don’t feed the bear” sticker on your shirt so customer’s don’t get you treats all the time!

Good luck at Vineman!

I thought about this thread as I polished off a large milkshake a few minutes ago . . .
